LA Times Editor Davan Maharaj Helps Kick Off UC Riverside Writers Week

What is the state of journalism today? You’ll get a very different answer depending on who you ask, with LA Times editor Davan Maharaj scheduled to give his latest take on that shifting topic tonight at 7:30 p.m. at UC Riverside.

Maharaj will deliver the event’s Hays Press-Enterprise lecture. Given his paper’s emergence from parent company bankruptcy and ability to detach itself soon under new ownership, it should be an interesting talk. LAT columnist Hector Tobar will also speak earlier this afternoon, at 2:30 p.m.:

The Hays Press-Enterprise Lecture is a series devoted to addressing issues in journalism and the media that was begun in 1966 by the late Howard H. (Tim) Hays when he was editor of the Press-Enterprise newspaper…

Literary Softball Battle This Weekend in Elysian Valley

In what will undoubtedly be one of the least athletic sporting contests this city has ever seen, the staff of LA lit mag Slake is taking on Red Hen Press, the Los Angeles Review of Books and the literary magazine Black Clock in a softball tournament tomorrow afternoon in the Elysian Valley.

Writes Slake associate editor Craig Gaines: “Camaraderie and greater awareness of local publishing are the orders of the day, but if the championship is on the line, I’m rounding third, and LARB’s Tom Lutz is blocking home plate, you can be damn sure I’m going to go Pete Rose–Ray Fosse on his ass.”

The games start tomorrow at noon at the Elysian Valley Recreation Center. Be there…or be…there for what will undoubtedly be a drunken after party. These are a bunch of writers after all.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Los Angeles Review of Books will publish a critique of young adult title Zora and Me, written by author Margaret Stohl. This will mark the beginning of an imprint on the site of by newly hired young adult and children’s editor Cecil Castellucci (pictured).

Castellucci, an award-winning young adult author, tells Publisher’s Weekly that she already has seven more reviews banked and plans to occasionally get a recognizable literary figure to write up a favorite kids title. She also explains how the sideline gig came about:

Castellucci met LARB founder and editor Tom Lutz at a Los Angeles literary event last year. “Tom called me in August and offered me the position, but it seemed so daunting at the time that I turned him down,” says Castellucci.
