You know things are bad when you get the wacky animated Taiwanese Next Media Animation treatment.

A day after a USC student manager was fired for deflating footballs during last week’s game against Oregon, head coach Lane Kiffin and the Trojans were mocked by our friends in Taiwan.

How soon before Kiffin joins Mike Brown on the unemployment line?

Lane Kiffin Still Doing Lane Kiffin Like Things

After banning Daily News reporter Scott Wolf last week, you would think USC football head coach Lane Kiffin would get his act together and stop jerking around the media.

Yeah, not so much.

Kiffin was up to his usual antics on Wednesday with a press conference that lasted less than 30 seconds.

He really doesn’t like talking about injuries.

USC Football Billboard Removed from Westwood

You know college football is right around the corner when billboards featuring the opposition start popping up in each other’s neighborhood.

A USC billboard went up on Westwood Boulevard and Lindbrook Drive featuring USC quarterback and Heisman Trophy favorite Matt Barkley with the words “WE PLAY TO FINISH.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, it’s one of 30 billboards that are featured throughout Los Angeles.

Well, make that 29.

USC QB Matt Barkley Covers Sports Illustrated

Quarterback Matt Barkley and USC are one of five teams sharing the honor of gracing Sports Illustrated‘s college football preview issue, which hit newsstands on Wednesday.

The other teams/quarterbacks are: Alabama (A.J. McCarron), Oklahoma (Landry Jones), West Virginia (Geno Smith) and Michigan (Denard Robinson).

Sports Illustrated has the Trojans losing in the BCS national title game to Alabama. We shall see.

UCLA’s Jim Mora Apologizes for Safety Remark

A new coach at USC or UCLA doesn’t truly earn their stripes until they take a swipe at the crosstown opposition.

Stripes earned, Jim Mora.

The new head coach of the UCLA football team joined Roger Lodge on the radio Wednesday and it appeared he took a shot at the crime that surrounds the USC campus.

“We don’t have murders a block from our campus,” Mora said regarding life in upscale Westwood.

Even though he didn’t mention USC by name, it was pretty obvious his comment was directed towards his new rival — a school that’s still coping following the murders of two international grad students in April.

USC Remembers Former Linebacker Junior Seau

Short and sweet, the University of Southern California released a touching tribute video for former linebacker Junior Seau, who was found dead Wednesday from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The 43-year-old sang “Wonderful Tonight” at USC’s Spring Game last month.

USC Football Going National Thanks to ESPN Deal

In the latest sign that USC football has recovered from their two-year postseason ban, ESPN Radio has signed a multi-year deal to land the exclusive national broadcast rights for all home Trojan football games on up to 300 affiliates nationwide.

The new agreement will also provide Spanish-language rights for home and away games on ESPN Deportes Radio in the Los Angeles market.

USC Football Won’t Sound the Same in 2012

If you’ve been to a USC football game in the past 22 years, you likely know the booming voice of public address announcer Dennis Packer.

Unfortunately for the retired police detective and voice of the San Diego Chargers, it appears Packer will be replaced next season and nobody knows why, according to the Daily Trojan:

Packer said he received a telephone call on March 27, from Craig Kelley, the university’s associate athletic director for marketing, in which Packer was notified he would no longer be needed as the team’s PA announcer and USC was headed in a different direction.

He says he has tried to follow up with the athletic department, as his brief communication with Kelley slightly differs from the release posted online on April 2.

Eric Burse Named NABJ Student Journo of the Year

University of Southern California student Eric Burse was named the 2012 National Association of Black Journalists Student of the Year and will be honored at NABJ’s 37th Annual Convention and Career Fair in New Orleans on June 23.

Burse is studying broadcast and digital journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism along with political science. He’s worked at the Daily Trojan as a photographer and entertainment reporter and at Annenberg’s TV station as a studio technician, assignment desk editor and on-air multimedia journalist.

“I am extremely honored to receive the NABJ Student Journalist of the Year recognition. This award means a great deal to me – far more than I can express. I share this award with other student journalists who are working just as hard as I am to achieve success in an industry we all look forward to joining,” Burse said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting NABJ just as much as the organization has supported me to through high school and college.”

Brandon Tartikoff’s Legacy Collection Donated to USC

The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts will be the new home this fall to a vast collection of Brandon Tartikoff‘s industry correspondences thanks to a donation by his widow, Lilly Tartikoff.

Tartikoff, the youngest programming chief in NBC history, was credited for the success of The Golden Girls, Miami Vice and The Cosby Show.

The collection, dating from 1979 to 1992, features more than 4,000 individual letters from Tartikoff during his time at at the network. Tartikoff passed away in 1997 at the age of 48 from Hodgkin’s Disease.

“We are very grateful to Lilly Tartikoff for this unique and generous gift,” said legendary filmmaker and USC alumnus George Lucas. “It is a staggering collection for students of television and popular culture, providing rare insight into the mind and achievements of arguably one of the most prominent and influential creative executives in television history.”

Hollywood Reporter Stirs Up USC-UCLA Rivarly

The Hollywood Reporter is kicking off USC-UCLA week by publishing a story in this week’s print edition looking at the crosstown collegiate rivalry through the eyes of Hollywood.

In the piece, Saturday Night Live alums Will Forte (UCLA) and Will Ferrell (USC) managed to get their digs in at each other’s school:

“I don’t really associate with USC fans. A certain type of person goes there — they aren’t good people. They’re very entitled, the type of person that will not hold the door for an old woman. They’ll intentionally walk a blind person into traffic. That’s what you’re working with at that school.”

USC Launches Matt Barkley Heisman Campaign

All it took was an upset victory against No. 4 Oregon on the road at Autzen Stadium for the USC athletic department to start a Heisman Trophy campaign for quarterback Matt Barkley.

Barkley threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as the Trojans held on to a 38-35 victory over the Ducks.

The Newport Beach junior has numbers similar to that of previous USC Heisman winners Carson Palmer (2002) and Matt Leinart (2004) through 11 games.

Hurting Barkley’s chances of even receiving an invite to the Dec. 10 ceremony in New York is USC’s ongoing probation and bowl ban. He has one last game to impress Heisman voters when the Trojans host crosstown rivals UCLA Saturday night at the Coliseum.

Fox Sports Issues Apology for Racist USC Video

Fox Sports issued an apology Wednesday for a video segment that mocked Asian students at the University of Southern California.

“Comedian” Bob Oschack hosted the segment for The College Experiment, where he wanted students to welcome Colorado and Utah to the Pac-12 Conference. Instead of the focus being on the Buffaloes and Utes, Oschack interviewed only Asian students where English wasn’t their first language, mocking their accents in the process. The video was pulled shortly after the network was made aware of it.
