Ann Coulter Turns Down Film Role

It seems even Ann Coulter doesn’t want to play Ann Coulter. Page Six of the New York Post has the details:

The leggy conservative has turned down an offer from director Doug Liman to appear in “Fair Game,” his left-leaning film about the Valerie Plame affair starring Naomi Watts as the CIA agent whose cover was blown by columnist Robert Novak. Sean Penn, who plays Plame’s underemployed husband Joseph Wilson, was pushing to have Coulter in a scene where she’d be screaming invectives at him. But Coulter said no.

Rod Lurie Wants The Politics To Play

Rod Lurie‘s new film, “Nothing But the Truth,” is a round-about depiction of the Valerie Plame scandal that involved New York Times journo Judith Miller. Lurie, a former film critic who has also directed “The Contender,” “Resurrecting the Champ” and “The Last Castle,” is eagerly anticipating the reaction to his film, which comes out tomorrow.

FBLA sat down with Lurie for the inside story:

FBLA: How did you come up with the notion for this film?

LURIE: Obviously, NBTT shares the same situation that Judy Miller found herself in — but it is not at all the Miller character. In the film, Kate’s character personally outs the CIA agent. Miller did not. Kate (Beckinsale) has a child she has to leave behind. Miller has no kids. I could go on but you get the point. In fact, I know very little about Judy’s story and even less about Plame’s – I was just curious what would happen if both the reporter and the subject of her piece had children and they went to school together … I wanted to see where that would lead me.

FBLA: Was this a journalist component or a political one?

LURIE: I had wanted to do a reporter protecting a source story for quite a while now. In fact, I was doing one for my TV series “Commander in Chief” at exactly the moment Steven Bochco replaced me on the show. Of course, he wiped that idea out and most every idea that I was going to mount. The end result was a story that i could turn into a film. You should expect my next thirteen movies to also come out of that unfortunate situation.

FBLA: Did the political situation affect the film?

LURIE: I don’t think that politics affected the film too much. It is really more of a thriller than it is anything else. However, I was careful to not be partisan. For one thing, one of the lessons I learned with my very partisan film “The Contender” is that audiences will turn on you if you seem to be attacking them. For another, the federal shield law — which is the bill pending Congress that would protect journalists — is well supported by both political parties.

Heather Mallick is Un-American

Journalist and author Heather Mallick doesn’t have American values. Mainly because she’s Canadian. Being a foreigner from another country, she wrote an opinion piece about Republican Veep Nominee Sarah Palin. The full text of it is here. It’s kind of not really notable other than it’s penned by a foreigner that has paid more attention to our politics than we ever have to theirs. In fact the last time we as a nation cared about Canada is when we invaded them in 1812.

Anyway, Heather Mallick in her column called Palin supporters ‘White Trash’ just because they unequivocally support a barely first-term governor from a state so small it has more senators than congresspeople, whose 17-year-old daughter got knocked up by a kid named Levi that claims to be a ‘fucking redneck’ on his myspace page, whose one qualification is that she lives closer to another continent than the majority of Americans and that she has killed a moose or two. Just because they think that’s a ‘smart choice’ and she’s ready to be leader of the free world. White trash? As a bowling trophy…

In the clip above, FNC’s Megyn Kelly is outraged because Mallick also said Palin looks like a porn actress and well…maybe that’s a sore spot for Kelly. Kelly states that Canadians believe in free speech which (shocker here on Fox) isn’t actually true. Canadians don’t use the US Bill of Rights even though most of them are white and most of them speak English. They have laws against hate speech…which isn’t free speech.

The point is Kelly calls Mallick ‘the other side of the ticket’: Obama-Biden-foreign columnists. Uh huh.

We kind of think Heather Mallick has some balls to be that snarky in a country that tries to legislate politeness. In this country you only have to worry about hate mail, death threats, getting Bill Maher-ed, Valerie Plame-d and Ward Churchill-ed. Thank god for our freedom of speech.

According to their press release, The Decemberists will perform their new single “Valerie Plame” a love song on The Late Night With Conan O’Brien on November 3 – the day before the national election.

Good job, Portland band. You’re only about 4 years late. Which is super early for Oregonians. But still. Geesh.
