Today’s Egregious Movie Blurb Critic: Joel Amos

When we read the words – “The Best Comic Cast Ever” – we think perhaps of a Billy Wilder classic or something more recent like Tootsie. Never in a million years would FishbowlLA connect that sentence to a new release arriving on the weekend of July 27, 2012.

Which separates us from LA-based moviefanatic.com contributor Joel Amos. On page D2 of today’s LA Times Calendar section, in large white font against blue background, those credited words of flattery adorn the top of a two-thirds-of-a-page sized ad for the Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn offering The Watch.

As is so often the case with this sort of hyperbolic praise, 20th Century Fox has taken some creative license. What Amos wrote in his original review was that “It [The Watch] is close to being the best comic cast ever.”

Fox Pulling Neighborhood Watch Movie Ads

Following the tragic murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Twentieth Century Fox are pulling the movie posters and trailer for their summer comedy Neighborhood Watch.

“We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida,” Fox said in a statement.

Martin was shot and killed by 28-year-old George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Fla.

Both the trailer and movie poster were created before last month’s shooting. In theaters July 27, the film stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade.

WGA 07 Strike Week 3: Coming Attractions

Fun as this is, think they cleared the music? Written by Danny Zuker and Tim Kelleher, who also directed.

Craig Mazin tries to separate the noise from the news. The commenters are more restrained than previously, and are posting about the Teamsters who’re crossing the picket lines. FBLA’s next door neighbor is a grip, who’s mighty glad to be on location, he says. But our designer pal, whose show went dark, says his crew is pissed off.

John August has a cute anecdote about seeing Peter Roth in Mozza, which sort of undercuts the whole “Writers–they’re just like us!” meme. In a similar vein, Campanile will open a Writer’s Soup Kitchen on Wed. with a $18 prix fixe dinner menu, which is cold comfort to assistants who don’t have union cards or jobs or a spare $20. The nicely brought-up writer will take a whole group of unemployed to dinner.

Ken Levine takes a brisk turn around holiday movies. Fred Claus is gonna tank:

ELF it’s not. ALF it’s not.

People really hate Vince Vaughn, don’t they?

Tomorrow is the big multi-union march down Hollywood Blvd, so wear red, and show up at 1 PM at the corner of Ivar Ave and Hollywood Blvd.

WGA Strike News Updates

Nikki Finke has opened her column up to reader comments about the WGA strike. Who knew she was so popular in Argentina? Finke’s coverage is far and away the most comprehensive, too.

KCET has already assured that the station’s prizewinning A Place of Our Own will start in January, strike or no strike, by committing to abide by whatever resolution the WGA accepts. Why don’t more networks chose to do this? (That’s not a rhetorical question–email us if you can explain this.)

The Guild is prepared to fight to the death for a bigger share of DVD/internet residuals, but the bonus materials included on most DVDs aren’t under WGA jurisdiction, which is odd.

IATSE members have been reminded of their contracts, just in case any of them were thinking of supporting the WGA, but the Teamsters get to choose. Of course, last time the Teamsters struck, writers crossed those picket lines in droves, but a Teamster strike is a fearful thing in show biz land.

But Vince Vaughn isn’t much of a pal, according to Ken Levine:

And thank you to actors like Vince Vaughn, who since he isn’t in the WGA finds nothing morally wrong with agreeing to polish scripts during a strike. The fact that we go out on strike to craft a deal that will be the template for the SAG deal so HE won’t have to go out on strike apparently means nothing to him.

Gossip Round-up

Madonna, no doubt practicing for a strange and lonely old age, stockpiles thousands of the costumes she wore on stage and in videos in a secret storage facility somehwere in California. She and the hubby dressed up as a 1920s flapper and NYPD police officer for the Fake Purim festival at the Kabbalah Center on Saturday night. We’d guessed she was the cop, but we’re wrong. Boy George strongly disapproves, calling her a “Gay Traitor”

Paris Hilton flirted with Vince Vaughn at some poker tournament in Las Vegas.

Larry Birkhead isn’t going to dance around with Howard K. Stern. Birkhead’s lawyer tells Stern to hand over Dannilynn for DNA testing. After all, Birkhead’s got the tattoo.
