AP Reporter Found Religion Covering LA Catholic Abuse Scandal

Sarah Pulliam Bailey at GetReligion.org just posted an interview with AP reporter Tom Breen that caught my eye. Bailey calls Breen the anti-William Lobdell, because unlike Lobdell, who left the Catholic Church after reporting on the sexual abuse scandals in the LA Archdiocese for the LA Times, Breen was a lapsed Catholic who became devoted while covering the exact same topic.

Breen, from the interview:

Ironically, it was my work covering elements of the sex abuse scandal that led me to become an “official” Catholic; I learned all I could about the faith to make sure my stories were accurate, and my learning convinced me this was the truth.

Having covered elements of the scandal myself, this seemed too improbable for words. How could anyone come to believe in the divine sanctity of the Catholic Church while reporting about how, for years, it covered up the sexual abuse of minors and protected the priests who were guilty of these crimes? We emailed Breen to ask him for some clarification.

Columnist Bent on Rescuing Costa Mesa Bids Adieu to Readers

Today, author and veteran journalist William Lobdell penned his final twice-weekly column for LA Times community newspaper The Daily Pilot. All because of a most unusual new opportunity that combines elements of PR with an opening for belated civic duty. He writes:

It’s time for me to shift gears. I’ve lived in Costa Mesa for more than two decades and have a deep love for the city. My adopted hometown is facing an unprecedented fiscal crisis — and suffering from the controversies that spill from it. Open, honest, and timely communications from the city is critical at this time.

While LAT Editor Russ Stanton prepares to deliver what must be a pretty awkward keynote speech at the OC Press Club Awards tonight (check back with us for more on that later), former Times staffers Marla Cone, William Lobdell, Larry Stewart and Henry Weinstein were on KPCC‘s “Airtalk” with Larry Mantle to discuss the disembowelment of the newspaper industry. Fun stuff. Hear it here.

LAT In 90 Seconds

Inland Empire: Spanish-language television network Telemundo apparently doesn’t have the cojones to fire Mirthala Salinas. So instead it will force her to quit. The one-time anchor, who was suspended without pay for two months in August for reporting on Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa while having an affair with him, will return to the station. As a reporter. In Riverside. This all but guarantees she’ll say adios to the station before her contract expires in December.

Harvey Keitel Is A Small Fish: This has to be news to the acclaimed actor. But according to Living Vicariously columnist William Lobdell, who spent the day as a paparazzo, if Keitel were a fish, “I’d have to throw him back.” Next week, Lobdell will spend the day as an aged actor whose life work is reduced to a bad analogy and until he’s tossed aside like a skinny minnow.

Cuomo “Pokes” Facebook: New York Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo is investigating Facebook’s safety claims. He’s just mad, because nobody has written on his wall.
