Culminating with an awards ceremony Tuesday night at the Backstage Theater on the Sony Lot, TheWrap’s inaugural ShortList short film festival recognized the top vote getters from a dozen hand-picked entries.

A judges’ panel consisting of Roadside Attractions co-president Howard Cohen, producer Cassian Elwes, actor Zachary Quinto, producer Lynette Howell and Sundance Institute feature film program founding director Michelle Satter crowned Fishing Without Nets – a drama about Somali pirates told from the pirates’ point of view – as the Jury Prize winner. The audience vote, gathered via thewrap.com and MTV websites film.com and nextmovie.com, favored The Maker. From Lucas Shaw’s report:

[Fishing Without Nets] director Cutter Hodierne nets a $60,000 reward from Panavision to be used for a future filmmaking project… Hodierne and [The Maker director] Christopher Kezelos will receive a new Sony Alpha A77 DLSR Cameras, as well as a first-look deal with Cinedigm.

Actor Zachary Quinto is the real deal. This was evident when he blogged about his personal life on Sunday, October 16, and it remains so today via a crisp Rebecca Keegan interview feature in the LA Times.

Of George Gershwin, the man he may or may not enact for Steven Spielberg, Quinto muses that the project celebrates an era “when celebrity was associated with people who were actually good at something.” The actor also explains how his latest film, Margin Call, took shape at Farmer’s Market and re-frames his headline-grabbing decision to publicly announce his sexual orientation:

“This decision was made with a tremendous amount of thought and introspection –in my own time, on my own terms and with my own words. I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the scores of men and women who have preceded me to this action–both within the industry and in more intimate personal journeys throughout the world. Momentum builds in waves–and I am so grateful to be riding this wave of equality with more openness and integrity than I was ever able to embrace before making this declaration.”

The latest cover story in The Advocate is an interview with American Idol‘s most memorable runner-up, Adam Lambert. All about the nature of his post-Simon celebrity as he puts the finishing touches on a second album.

The good news is that Lambert continues to become more comfortable with the media spotlight and says that being in a healthy personal relationship (which he currently is) helps a great deal. The not-so-good news is that many outlets still want to harp on his sexuality:

“It’s been the weirdest battle with identifying as a gay man in mainstream culture,” he says. “I think The Advocate is an exception—I think a respected gay publication treats it differently–but in regular journalism they make such a big deal out of homosexuality!…”

Set in ten bars around LA, writer-director Sebastien Gutierrez‘s comedy-drama Girl Walks Into a Bar stars such familiar names as Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, and Zachary Quinto. However, when the film premieres March 11th, it will do so not in theaters but rather simultaneously at SXSW and on YouTube, for free.

Producer Steve Bing and promotional partner Lexus are dubbing their movie “the first major motion picture created specifically for web distribution.” Per today’s press release:

“The movie escapes the confines of traditional film production and is a bold undertaking that is set to transform the film industry,” said Dave Nordstrom, vice president of marketing, Lexus. “It seems fitting to support this initiative as we launch our most unconfined vehicle yet—the CT 200h hybrid —in a space that we know will reach an unconventional, sophisticated audience.”
