We have always been big fans of Santa Barbara based science and technology website Miller-McCune. In fact, if you missed Tom Jacobs‘ recent story about how song lyrics in recent years have migrated from “we” love to “me” adoration, you should really check it out.
So it pleases FishbowlLA greatly to see Miller-McCune among the three area nominees for 2011 Utne Reader Independent Press Awards, alongside – in the Social/Culture category – GOOD and make/shift. Per the press release:
“Our awards — like every issue of Utne Reader —are designed to celebrate those independent and alternative periodicals that give readers a fresh take on their world,” editor-in-chief David Schimke says…
Utne Reader’s editors select nominee publications through an extensive reading process and yearlong examination, rather than via a competition with entry forms and fees. This way, the magazine honors the efforts of smaller, sometimes overlooked publications.
Bravo to that non-entry fees methodology, by the way. Winners will be announced May 18th in San Francisco.
