With or Without Superman, Vancouver Flying High

We’ve written before about how Los Angeles is now essentially a TV production town and no longer a studio movie making metropolis. This is certainly borne out by a report today in the Vancouver Sun, a newspaper of record in the nearest runaway production hub.

British Columbia Film Commission staffer Susan Croome has just in fact returned from a business trip to LA. Though she can’t confirm reports that Zack Snyder‘s reboot of Superman will be shot there in 2011, like the filmmaker’s previous films Watchmen and Sucker Punch, it doesn’t really seem to matter.

Tom Cruise is in Vancouver for the latest Mission Impossible movie. Liam Neeson will be shooting The Grey, a thriller from Ridley Scott and Tony Scott’s production company. Kate Beckinsale will be here for Underworld 4. An Alvin and The Chipmunks movie, Chipmunked, will also be shooting here, along with the sci-fi movie Apollo 18, a Weinstein company vehicle…

“The big studio facilities here are all really busy,” said Mammoth-North Shore Studios’ Peter Leitch. “In fact we’re turning away work.”

To all those feature film production people in LA who’ve had to scramble in recent years to find work of any kind, the Canadian west coast city might as well be called “Cryptonite.”
