Yahoo! Nabs Republican #OWS Media Talking Points
Great story by Yahoo!’s Chris Moody about how Republican media and political strategists are attempting to spin the Occupy Wall Street movement. Moody is in Florida covering the Republican Governors Association and sat in on an #OWS talking points session given by Republican strategist Frank Luntz. Interestingly, Luntz admitted he was terrified of the #OWS movement, and his media strategy is all about playing defense against the power of the #OWS message.
“I’m so scared of this anti-Wall Street effort. I’m frightened to death. They’re having an impact on what the American people think of capitalism.”
Luntz went on to lay out 10 talking points. The first was probably the most interesting. Stop using the word “capitalism.”
“I’m trying to get that word removed and we’re replacing it with either ‘economic freedom’ or ‘free market.’ The public . . . still prefers capitalism to socialism, but they think capitalism is immoral. And if we’re seen as defenders of quote, Wall Street, end quote, we’ve got a problem.”
We’ll definitely be keeping an ear out to see if that one makes its way through the media echo chamber. Read all of Moody’s piece to see what other tropes all you journalists with a hint of self-respect should automatically avoid in your writing.
