Awards Grass is Greenberg for Focus Features

The March 2010 Noah Baumbach drama Greenberg is a very difficult film to like. Ben Stiller stars as one of the biggest a-holes – real or imagined – to ever make the pilgrimage from New York to LA.  As anyone who has come across their fare share of pilgrims here knows, that’s saying a lot.

Nevertheless, the drama is arguably the biggest beneficiary of this morning’s 2010 Independent Spirit Awards nominations, with nods for Best Feature, Best Male Lead (Stiller), Best Female Lead (Greta Gerwig) and Best Cinematography (Harris Savides). Savides, formerly a music video specialist, is the only person to ever win three MTV VMAs in that same cinematography category.

According to the always entertaining and not always reliable IMDB trivia page for Greenberg, the film was originally supposed to star Mark Ruffalo and Amy Adams. What’s more, the now separated c0-writing duo of Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh reportedly added ten years to the lead character and rewrote the script entirely after deciding it could be a showcase for Stiller.

It’s very unlikely that Greenberg will win any of its four awards on the beach in Santa Monica. But for Focus Features, which also has another five Spirit nominations with The Kids Are All Right, this is already more than they or the sullen Roger Greenberg could have ever hoped for.
