For classic film fans, there are many reasons to want to be in Key Largo, Florida this weekend following the close of TCM’s latest local celebration. Starting with the following Saturday May 4 lunchtime event:
Join Stephen Bogart and Leonard Maltin as they discuss the life and career of Humphrey Bogart. Topics will include Bogie’s breakout performances, Bogie’s signature acting style, discussion of stories behind some of the memorabilia items and the experience of growing up with Bogie and Bacall.
Maltin and Bogart Jr. will be omipresent throughout the first annual Humphrey Bogart Film Festival, which runs in South Florida today through Sunday. On that same Saturday, Bogart will also be presenting John Huston‘s grandson Jack (Boardwalk Empire) with a special award.
The main theme of the inaugural 2013 edition are Bogie’s film noirs, alongside other genre classics like Sunset Blvd. and LA Confidential. Attendees can also take a spin in the original prop boat from The African Queen and enjoy a number of outdoor screenings “under the stars.”
For those who either reside or plan on hiking through Beachwood Canyon this weekend, the next best thing is the 6310 Rogerton Drive abode once occupied by Bogart
and Bacall. There’s little doubt that the launch of this new annual film festival by the estate will be instantly successful and part of a new tradition sure to expand in the coming years. Wish we could be there.
