We conducted a feature interview with Complex publisher Rich Antoniello and editor Richard Martin, and they had some tough love for the MPA, big magazines’ corporate culture and people who call them “urban.”
Martin on the MPA’s diversity initiative: “There was a lot of patting each other on the back, or giving excuses. I think any diversity initiative is just lip-service.”
Antoniello on his experience at Wenner Media and National Georgraphic: “Every time you were looking to make a change in the magazine editorially, it was like turning the Titanic.”
Martin on ‘urban’: “When someone calls us ‘urban,’ and I get it a lot, I consider it straight-up racist.”
And we consider this interview straight-up candid.
