A Full Week of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger

On Sunday November 24, 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft revisited the Boston gangster’s undercover life and capture in Santa Monica, although his report very strangely skipped over any specific mention of Anna Bjornsdottir (a.k.a. Anna Bjorn), the former Miss Iceland (1974) whose tip led to Bulger’s capture and her pocketing the $2.1 million reward.

MDCBrooklynOn Tuesday, Bulger was quietly moved from a facility in Norfolk, MA to one in Brooklyn. So quietly in fact that hometown reports like this one in the Boston Herald surfaced only two days later.

Finally, on Friday, Boston Globe reporter Shelley Murphy revealed that authorities hope to auction off Bulger’s personal possessions (minus the guns) to benefit families of his victims. Despite the headline appended to her article and several other reports with a similar theme, the auction will not be happening in time for Christmas. The event must first be sanctioned by a court, after which it generally takes 30 to 60 days for it to be scheduled.

Among the many auction questions: How much would a wealthy conservative voter pay for Bulger’s McCain/Palin button? Is there a hockey fan or three willing to compete for this very bad man’s 1986 Stanley Cup championship replica ring (valued at $3,000). Read the rest of Murphy’s here.
