A-Rod: Just Like Every Media Mogul You Know

a_rod_si_092506.jpgThe baseball world is buzzing over this cover story by Sports Illustrated‘s Tom Verducci about New York Yankees’ third baseman Alex Rodriguez in which teammates are quoted both on and off the record questioning the All Star’s attitude this season. For non-baseball fans, some things to know about A-Rod:

  • As a free agent, left Seattle, the team that drafted him, for the highest bidder — the Texas Rangers — signing a $250 million contract.
  • The highest paid player in baseball, earns roughly $25 million per season.
  • Nearly signed with the Mets, who reportedly balked at A-Rod’s off-field contract demands that included office space for his marketing team.
  • Demanded a trade when his team wasn’t winning.
  • Always has great statistics, but often fails to come through in the “big spot.”
  • Collects numerous individual awards but has yet to win a championship.
  • Is often booed publicly.
  • Thinks he is above the team.
  • Tans in Central Park.
  • Is tabloid fodder.
  • Is ridiculed by late night talk shows — and the Onion.

Of course, that doesn’t sound anything like high-profile media executives you know.

    Nope, not at all.

Too bad the Yankees can’t auction A-Rod off to school kids.
