So Long and Thanks For All the Fish… BowlLA!

I was offered a gig as managing editor of the award-winning mega-blog Crooks and Liars and I’ve decided to take it. Regrettably, this means I will not have the time to blog here any longer. So because I’ve been an editor at FishbowlLA for over three years–the longest I’ve ever worked anywhere (I am a freelancer)–I wanted to pen my own exit interview:

Q. What is the weirdest thing to happen to you at FishbowlLA?

A. Remember the Mini Me sex tape? Vern Troyer had this tape leaked of he and his girlfriend going at it. The girlfriend just so happened to look a lot like my co-editor at the time, Mayrav Saar. So I thought it would be hilarious (it was) to write a post with the image saying, “We just wanted to get in front of this – this is NOT Mayrav in the Mini Me sex tape.” The next day we got a cease and desist letter from Troyer’s lawyers telling us to take down the image. So the weirdest? A cease and desist from Mini Me’s attorney over an in-office joke.

See my response to the lawyer here.

Breaking: Cenk Uygur: ‘I’m Out at MSNBC’

Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks dishes on why he’s no longer at MNSBC. “I didn’t want to work at a place that didn’t want to do my kind of show,” says Uygur.

Go See Dinosaur Hall!

The press was invited to a preview of the newest exhibit at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum this morning. It’s a 14,000 square foot permanent exhibit with 20 completed skeletons and over 300 fossils. The highlight (the world’s only) is a trio of T-Rex’s ranging from the youngest complete specimen to Thomas the T-Rex himself. Excuse us, we’re still giddy. Giddy!

‘Forbes Columnist’ Needs Willing Slave

This was sent to us by Howard Stier just before it was flagged for removal.

Let’s remember a “Forbes Columnist” is actually a former True/Slant blogger.

I am seeking talented, well-trained, hard-working, and intrepid journalists, either in or fresh out of Journalism school, or equivalent, who know how to write and research on very tight deadlines. Knowledge of PhotoShop, HTML, Search Engine Optimization, WordPress, public policy issues and financial markets are all a plus, but these are not requirements. You can start immediately and will need to work at least 15 hours a week out of my Hancock Park office.

Journalists Arrested In Wisconsin

Sam Mayfield, who has been tirelessly reporting the protests in Madison, WI for most of the year, was arrested this week along with a student journalist.

Mayfield writes:

On June 6th two journalists were arrested at the state capital in Madison, WI.

I was one of them.

I was grabbed by an aggressive and very escalated police officer after walking in to the state capital on June 6th. Officer Corcoran told me to leave, to “get out”. It was bewildering because I was already in the building and was simply walking by him filming my way in to the rotunda.

Rush Limbaugh Makes Fun of Cenk Uygur’s Name

Today Rush Limbaugh, whose name is synonymous with the effect of shooting up drugs, thinks it’s within the bounds to make fun of our local media pioneer, Cenk Uygur with his equally weird name. “I don’t know what a Cenk Uygur is,” Limbaugh said this morning on his radio show. “I don’t know where a Cenk Uygur works.”

Oh The Places Marilyn Monroe Lived…

Jonathan Lloyd has compiled a nifty Google map of all the places the late Marilyn Monroe called home in SoCal. Apparently she was more of an East-sider and sometimes Valley girl.

Wow, to do a tour it’d take two days…without traffic.

Lucas Grindley Goes to The Advocate

The former online managing editor for the National Journal, Lucas Grindley, just tweeted about his new gig. Congrats Grindley!
