Harry Chapin Media Award Winners Announced

why.pngWHY, a nonprofit organization that combats hunger and poverty, recently announced the winners of its 2008 Harry Chapin Media Awards, named in honor of co-founder and singer Harry Chapin.

Although the awards, presented by WHY and Mediabistro, will be awarded at a ceremony in New York in September, only one New York media outlet was named a winner. The New York Times' Lydia Polgreen received a Judge's Award for her work on "The Spoils," an in-depth article about the Congo and the renegade troops that control the mineral-rich area.

Other award winners include The Washington Post's Debbie Cenziper and Sarah Cohen and CQ Weekly's Aliya Sternstein.

Harry Chapin Media Awards Winners Announced

WHY announced the best in hunger and poverty journalism, as winners of the 2008 Harry Chapin Media Awards were chosen by an independent panel of judges. The HCMAs were established in 1982 to reward journalists for their coverage of hunger and poverty-related issues. The winners will be honored at the Harry Chapin Media Awards Ceremony, presented by WHY and Mediabistro, on Sept. 22, 2009 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, New York City.

The panel of judges were: Stephanie Heimann, co-founder of Fovea, a charity that educates on domestic and international issues through photojournalism; Doug Lasdon, Executive Director, Urban Justice Center; Carlos Rodriguiz, Vice President of Agency Relations and Food Programs, Food Bank for New York City; Tim Scheld, News Director, CBS 880; Yvonne Latty, Professor of Journalism at NYU, and an author; Kerry Truemann, co-founder of Eatingliberally.org and a frequent contributor to Huffington Post; Elizabeth McDonald, Stocks Editor, Fox Business Network; and Timothy Fadek, Adjunct Professor, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and an award-winning photojournalist.
