New York Magazine Sparks Post-News-Mayor Ruckus

Here’s how it all went down.

On Sunday, New York magazine posted “Chirlane McCray’s City,” the Web version of contributing editor Lisa Miller‘s profile of Mayor de Blasio’s wife.

NYPost_0519On Monday, the Post and Daily News front-page framed the interview revelations as being of the “bad mom” variety. And today, in the pages of the New York Times, there is coverage of a quickly convened Monday de Blasio presser:

The mayor decided midday on Monday that he wanted to address the headlines, and ordered his aides to organize a question-and-answer session with reporters. “It suggests a tremendous misunderstanding of what it means to be a parent, what it means to be a mother,” de Blasio said of the coverage.

“A lot of hardworking women in this city are offended,” de Blasio added. “I think both the Post and the Daily News owe Chirlane an apology. I think they owe all of us an apology.”

Neither tabloid had any “immediate” comment for NYT City Hall bureau chief Michael Grynbaum. But given how important a cordial relationship with the sitting mayor is to both these papers, you can bet the apologies are forthcoming.
