The New Yorker Snubbed at National Magazine Awards

The National Magazine Awards (a.k.a. The Ellies) were given out last night and almost every magazine you can think of won, aside from The New Yorker. The magazine was nominated five times, but failed to take home a paperweight that vaguely resembles an elephant for the first time since 2007. But don’t feel bad for The New Yorker. It’s still The New Yorker.

Other notables from the Ellies: New York won Magazine of The Year and National Geographic won four times, the most of any magazine.

Below is the extremely long list of winners.

New York’s Hurricane Sandy Cover is ASME’s Magazine Cover of The Year

Unsurprisingly, New York’s “The City and The Storm” has won ASME’s 2013 Magazine Cover of The Year award.

The stunning photograph for New York’s November 12, 2012 issue was taken by Iwan Baan. He took the picture while hovering above the city in a helicopter.

Unfortunately for Brooklyn, MTV Brings VMAs to Barclays Center

On Sunday, August 25, MTV will be broadcasting its Video Music Awards from the Barclays Center, so if you live anywhere near the arena, you might want to just leave town that weekend.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s happening. In fact, here’s a couple terrible statements from Michael Bloomberg and Marty Markowitz to prove it. We honestly cannot decide which is more annoying, but the early edge goes to Markowitz.

Bloomberg:

Brooklyn is home to icons like the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, and now it can lay claim to the MTV Video Music Awards.

Likening the status of the Brooklyn Bridge to the VMAs has got to be illegal somehow.

Partial List of Pulitzer Judges Leaks

Quartz has published the names of 44 of the Pulitzer Prize judges who have begun the process of figuring out who will get journalism’s highest honor.

Is this exciting? Not really. Especially since it’s probably not the full list and the judges taking part are publicized after the awards are doled out anyway.

However, it’s a slow news day, so here’s a few of the judges: Raju Narisetti, Rachel Smolkin, Lincoln Millstein and David Callaway. Check out the rest here.

Talking Oscars with Longtime Movie Critic Jeffrey Lyons

Jeffrey Lyons is back on WCBS 880 with his popular movie review segment, the nationally heard Lyons Den Radio.

Lyons, known for more than 40 years of his insightful cinematic critiques and entertaining interviews, worked at 880 from 1975 to 1994. He was also a regular reviewer on WPIX from 1970 to 1991.

Lyons took his local voice national with PBS’ Sneak Previews, which had a 14-year run. Most recently, Lyons brought the “Den” to WNBC. His 13-year run included a syndicated Reel Talk that he created.

With the Oscars being polished up for Sunday’s 85th annual event, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to speak to Lyons and pick his brain about the contenders and possible surprises.

“My upset pick is Hugh Jackman for Best Actor for Les Mis,” Lyons tells FishbowlNY. “Jackman gave one of the great performances I’ve ever seen.”

He expects Daniel Day-Lewis, though, will nab his record-setting third Best Actor for his portrayal of America’s 16th president.

The buzz is building for Steven Spielberg, director of Lincoln.

“I think he’s going to win. He has an Oscar pedigree,” Lyons says. “He hasn’t won enough to suit me. He’s the greatest filmmaker of our time … I’m glad to be alive in the Steven Spielberg era.”

WCBS 880 and WNET Among Writers Guild Award Winners

The final award ceremony before Sunday night’s Academy Awards handed out trophies for the best writers in the country. At the top of the Writers Guild winners’ list was Oscar favorite Argo and for the screenplay categories.

But there was a local feel Saturday night. WCBS 880 tech segment Dishin Digital was recognized for writer Robert Hawley. The feature is hosted by Paul Murnane.

On the TV side, PBS’ Channel 13/WNET was honored, or specifically Bill Moyers, for the analysis, feature, or commentary section. His piece The Ghost of Joe McCarthy won the award for Moyers and Michael Winship.

McDonalds Holds Annual Black Media Legends Gala

As the calendar flipped to February, it became Black History Month. For the annual honor, the tri-state McDonalds restaurants select Black Media Legends and Trailblazers. Each year they are showcased on the place mats of customers’ trays.

This year, the lunchtime event moved from the Waldorf Astoria to the Plaza Hotel.

The 18 people are standouts in their fields (TV, radio, and newspapers). But this was all about the great WNBC anchor Sue Simmons, who stepped down last June.

Most of the presenters and award winners mentioned Simmons in their speeches, or ad libbed, due to her remarkable career and presence.

Ironically, John Noel, a reporter with WNBC since 1998, never mentioned Sue’s name in accepting his trophy. FishbowlNY did speak to Noel, a Brooklyn native, about sharing this year’s class with his former colleague.

“If you’re going to call anybody a legend in the media here in New York City, clearly she qualifies for the title,” Noel says. “She’s known and loved by millions of people in the metropolitan area. Much of what she’s done on the air remains legendary.”

The full list of winners after the jump
