TLC Reality Show Has Vegas Worried

Following up an item from last month, Vegas man-about-town Robin Leach checks back in to a major topic of Sin City conversation. Locals are increasingly fearful that the upcoming TLC reality series Vegas High Rollers will bathe the Strip in an exaggerated negative light. To which FishbowlLA replies, what else is new?

That’s the M.O. of reality TV. To orchestrate and amp up the confrontations, no matter how real, followed by many sweaty hours in the editing room. It’s a well-worn cliffhanger-pinwheel process seemingly re-confirmed by one of Leach’s sources:

“The truth is that it was a different project that they signed on to, and it has gone in a direction they hoped would never happen. They are totally frustrated. The producers who also shoot Real Housewives episodes promised this would be different – about powerful women who have made it on their own. They know Vegas is a small community where everybody knows everybody involved, not like Real Housewives in much bigger cities.”

Michael Ian Black Imparts Twitter Wisdom to Madeleine Brand

Sometimes a new gig means a new Twitter handle. Such was the case for Madeleine Brand, who recently made the leap from public radio station KPCC to a TV gig on KCET’s “SoCal Connected.” Her Twitter handle of choice was her name, but that was already taken, leaving Brand unsure how to, well, re-Brand. That’s when author and comedian Michael Ian Black, a man with 1.2 million Twitter followers and a whole lot of opinions, stepped in.

Madeleine Brand eventually settled on the sweet and simple @TheMadBrand. We’re following.

Cockroach Butts in Robert Kovacik’s Live Shot

If you’re squeamish, this next post isn’t for you.

NBC4′s Robert Kovacik was reporting from West L.A. Thursday night when a cockroach decided to steal his thunder and crawl all over the reporter during his live shot.

Kovacik tweeted the following after he was done with his live report: “Thanks viewers for noticing the “guest” in our live shot! Any names for my new pet?”

Gro-ss.

Bill Simmons, Jalen Rose Join NBA Countdown

After a false start, ESPN has finalized their ESPN/ABC KIA NBA Countdown show by adding Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose, the network formally announced on Thursday.

Originally, Simmons was reportedly going to join Stan Van Gundy on the show, but when FishbowlLA contacted ESPN last month, they were unable to confirm the news. The former Orlando Magic head coach explained last week the reason why he didn’t get the job had to do with NBA commissioner David Stern, who reportedly nixed the idea. Read more

KCET to Merge With Satellite Network Link TV

Local public television station KCET announced a merger today with Link Media, an independent non-profit media company based in San Francisco. The resulting company will be called KCETLink and will be headquartered in KCET’s Burbank offices.

Hopefully the merger will provide KCET with much-needed resources. The station has been experiencing financial struggles, including a precipitous drop in contributions since leaving PBS in 2010.

More details on the deal from the New York Times:

After the merger, effective Jan. 1, the two brands and most of their programming will remain separate. But Link TV, which airs cultural and news shows and series like the Danish import “Borgen,” will get an immediate visibility boost in Los Angeles, where KCET will begin to broadcast it on one its digital multicast channels.

Currently, Link TV is available in just 33 million DirecTV and Dish Network homes nationwide.

KCET head Al Jerome will become chief executive of the KCETLink, and Link Media president Paul S. Mason will become chief strategy officer. Jerome advised the NYT that there would be layoffs after the merger, “as some business functions, including fund-raising, are consolidated.”

Honey Boo Boo Visits Jimmy Kimmel Live

You better redneckognize, Los Angeles.

Reality sensations June Shannon and Alana Thompson, better known as “Mama” and “Honey Boo Boo” are in town and paid Jimmy Kimmel a visit on Monday night.

During their interview, the pageant star from McIntyre, Ga. endorsed President Barack Obama over Mitt Romney, securing the vote of the 5-9 demographic.

Instead of another season of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo in Georgia, tell me you wouldn’t want to see this family living in the middle of Beverly Hills. It would be reality gold.

Make it happen, TLC.

Jimmy Kimmel Tops White House and Emmys with Dave

A dream year for Jimmy Kimmel is about to get dreamier.

On top of getting the news that his show will be moving in the New Year to 11:35 p.m. and hosting major powwows on both coasts (White House Correspondents dinner, Primetime Emmys), there’s now this. Per a report by Lacey Rose in The Hollywood Reporter, Kimmel will finally be afforded the opportunity to interview his lifelong idol David Letterman:

Letterman will join Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Tracy Morgan as a guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live when the ABC host brings his late-night show to his hometown of Brooklyn for one week later this month. The move is a monumental one for Kimmel, who grew up wearing a Late Night with David Letterman jacket and would celebrate his birthday with a Late Night cake.

Did You Miss the Lakers Game? You Aren’t Alone

The Los Angeles Lakers opened the 2012-13 preseason on Sunday night and unless you have Time Warner Cable, you were out of luck.

A week after Time Warner Cable SportsNet launched, it has yet to secure deals with DirecTV, Dish, AT&T and Verizon, leaving many Southern California residents without their Lakers.

Unlike the dispute between the Pac-12 Network and DirecTV, there will be serious backlash if Time Warner doesn’t start coming to terms with the other local cable providers by Opening Night on Oct. 30.

“We expect that Time Warner will reach deals with other TV providers in the near future, but I cannot give you an estimate on when,” Lakers spokesman John Black told NBC4 in an email.

Roseanne Barr vs. the ‘Duopolistic Fundraising Machine’

Roseanne Barr dropped by The Young Turks to chat with host Cenk Uygur about her presidential campaign. Ahead of tonight’s airing of the interview, the show has posted a teaser clip.

Barr is likely the only 2012 candidate you’ll hear talking about the domestic prison labor force being used to manufacture 90% of house paints sold in the U.S. She calls herself the “legalization candidate” and says she’s all about “common sense solutions.”
