A Relaunched Good Seeks Multimedia Pieces With an Emphasis on the ‘Global Citizen’

It is rare to see a magazine return to print after stopping the presses, but Good has done just that, returning to magazine shelves in the last quarter of 2013.

Rather than focusing on chasing news stories, editorial director Joshua Neuman says that the magazine has a stronger interest in the idea of the “global citizen.” Since its relaunch, the magazine has become more open to pitches from freelancers for both its online and print components. In fact, the magazine is now comprised of 80 percent freelance content and Neuman says he accepts “as much as possible.”

Each issue is focused on a theme, such as urban sustainability or waste, so it would be in writers’ best interest to pitch accordingly and provide supplementary content. Neuman says:

We are invested in telling stories across various multimedia platforms and exploring new ways of telling these stories. The multimedia content should be intrinsic to the story being pitched. Ultimately, a strong story or irresistible idea has the best chance of being accepted — no matter what medium or media.

Critics Sip on ‘Shark-Tinis’ at Sharknado 2 Premiere

Monday night’s screening at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles was, appropriately enough, poolside at the Beverly Hilton. Among those in attendance: Chuck Barney, critic for the Contra Costa Times and other Bay Area newspapers.

Trump Interview Crowns Scottish Doc Sequel

ShutterstockTrumpTowerBuzz is starting to build for A Dangerous Game, Anthony Baxter‘s follow-up to his Michael Moore-style 2011 documentary You’ve Been Trumped. In that original movie, the filmmaker chronicled some eventual local resistance to a luxury golf course resort development ushered in by The Donald.

The sequel recently premiered at film festival events in Sheffield, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. As part of the latter unveiling, Baxter spoke with the Scottish Daily Record about the climactic centerpiece of his new movie – an interview with Trump. The billionaire did not participate in the first movie and in fact, when the BBC announced plans to broadcast the film, he initially tried to have that airing blocked. From Baxter’s conversation with Record reporter Brian McIver:

“I went to Trump Tower and it was quite a strange experience,” said Baxter. “It was good in the sense we were able to put questions to him that were still remaining from the first film but new questions also emerged in the making of the second film. It was an extraordinary encounter and an important one in terms of being able to put to him directly the issues the residents have endured for so long.”

Rupert Murdoch Thinks Climate Change Isn’t a Big Deal

Rupert Murdoch has two words for scientists and anyone else who believes climate change is having a disastrous impact on the way we live: Oh c’mon. In an interview with Australia’s Sky News, Murdoch said the rising temperature of the Earth wasn’t a big deal.

“We should approach climate change with great skepticism,” he explained. “Climate change has been going on as long as the planet is here. And there will always be a little bit of it.”

While Murdoch admitted that climate change might result in the sea level rising and thus devouring entire islands, he had an easy solution for that. ”The Maldives might disappear, but we can’t mitigate that, we can’t stop it, we just have to stop building vast houses on seashores,” said the 83-year-old News Corp CEO. Now that’s some smart thinking.

Per comScore, theFashionSpot – a community of designers, stylists and influencers that is part of Evolve Media’s TotallyHer brand – notched 2.5 million unique visitors in May.

LeBron James Announces Cleveland Return Via Sports Illustrated

This is what you call one hell of a get. Everyone in the sporting world — and many others outside of it — was awaiting word on where LeBron James would play next season, and Sports Illustrated got the scoop.

In an article by James (as told to SI’s Lee Jenkins), James explained his reasons for returning to Cleveland to play for the Cavs:

It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son. Their passion can be overwhelming. But it drives me. I want to give them hope when I can. I want to inspire them when I can. My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didn’t realize that four years ago. I do now.

Et Tu, Journalists Who Wrote That Bogus George Clooney Item?

As we reported Wednesday, George Clooney rarely calls out the media. But when he does, be it over a 2013 item about the delayed release of Monuments Men or a 2014 item about his future wife, it’s duly noted.

With criticism of the Daily Mail continuing for a piece that has since been deleted (a Slate op-ed by Will Oremus for example is headlined “George Clooney is Right About the Daily Mail“), we wondered about the reporters caught in the middle.

The single source for the article is a “Lebanese friend of the [Alamuddin] family in London” (also later identified by the Mail as a “reputable and trusted freelance journalist”). The byline lists as authors Hannah Roberts, a freelance journalist in Rome, and Sara Nathan, New York-geo-tagged showbiz editor-at-large for MailOnline US. Although there is no sign of an apology on either writer’s Twitter feed, Roberts has been silent there since this Clooney business broke. Nathan, at her end, has moved on to other topics like the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.
