Michael Musto: ‘I knew I was on the chopping block’ at Village Voice

While news of Village Voice vet Michael Musto getting the axe was a shock to many, the man himself knew there was trouble ahead. When EIC Will Bourne and deputy editor Jessica Lustig were on their way out the door, one of them told Musto that he needed to worry. “I knew I was on the chopping block,” he told Mediabistro for its latest So What Do You Do? interview.

Yet, while “La Dolce Musto” may have ended, the show goes on with “Musto! The Musical!” and other fantastic things:

When it got onto Gawker.com that I was going to be laid off and the word was out, I didn’t have to pitch myself. People started coming to me. So, by the end of the week, I had lined up all this stuff. It was only on contingency, because I thought the Voice might keep me on in some capacity — the rumor was that I was going to be a Web-only [columnist] — and I was prepared to work that out with them. But it turned out to be a complete layoff, so I was able to take these other opportunities.

Roger Ailes’ Kennedy Center Speech Translated

Last night, Roger Ailes, mastermind behind Fox News, gave a speech at the Kennedy Center. He made some good jokes, but what we wanted to focus on was his political ranting. Since most of his quotes were vague, we went ahead and decoded them for you. Below are our favorites, via New York.

“We’ve allowed ourselves to be manipulated by others, many of whom want to impose their culture and laws onto the manufactured utopian idea that all cultures are equal and most are better than America.”

Translation: What’s the deal with non-white people?

“Are we losing America to the inevitable onrushing tides of history? No. But we’re in a storm. Our mast is broken. Our compass is off. And there’s a damn big hole in the boat.”

Rupert Murdoch Files for Divorce

Rupert Murdoch is calling it quits with his wife of 14 years, Wendi Deng. According to Deadline, Murdoch filed for divorce this morning in New York’s Supreme Court.

Murdoch and Deng met in 1997 and married in 1999, just weeks after his divorice with Anna Maria Torv Murdoch Mann was finalized. We have two questions:

1) Is a new, future ex Mrs. Murdoch just around the corner?

2) Without Deng, who will protect Murdoch from pie attacks?

Jonah Lehrer Shopping Book About Love

Jonah Lehrer is back. Or at least, he’s trying. According to Slate, Lehrer — who was repeatedly busted for lying, then said he only did so because he’s smarter than everyone else — is currently shopping a book about the science of love.

While Lehrer deserves a fifth chance, we imagine that any publishing house that agrees to go in with him will do so with a certain amount of worry. Then again, Lehrer’s book could end up being a huge hit, because you can never doubt the public’s ability to consume anything produced by a celebrity, no matter how loose that word is defined.

However, if Lehrer’s love book gets published, we’re going to compare his words to our copy of The Notebook. You know, just to be sure.

Connie Anne Phillips Might Return to Condé Nast

Let’s start things off today with a good old fashioned media rumor. Media rumors are different than say, those about celebrities or politics, because media rumors involve just as much speculation, but they’re about someone/something that 97.3 percent of the world doesn’t give a shit about. But hey, we’re a media blog, so here we go: WWD is reporting that Connie Anne Phillips — the former Vogue veteran — might return to Condé Nast.

Apparently Phillips is considering going back because she’s uncertain about the direction of Time Inc., as it prepares to be spun off from Time Warner. The chatter has Phillips, most recently the publisher of InStyle, likely landing at Glamour. In this scenario, Bill Wackermann would be shuffled to some sort of marketing services role.

The main obstacle to Phillips’ return to Condé (if it’s even true that she wants to go back) is her contract with Time Inc., which prohibits her from signing with a competitor for an unknown period. But please, don’t let this stop the rumors.

The only details Musto gave were on the Gawker and Out.com columns:

I’ll be doing a weekly interview feature for Gawker, covering all manner of celebs and viral sensations. I’m also doing a weekly column on Out.com called ‘Musto the Musical!’ It will span gossip, Broadway, movies, nightlife, everything.

We figured Musto wouldn’t have a tough time finding work. Now let’s see how this all goes.

In Effort to Finally Destroy Themselves, Republicans Ask Trump to Run for President

Either Republicans hate themselves, or Donald Trump is an attention whore. Perhaps it’s both! Because according to The New York Post, Republicans are getting excited about Trump possibly running for president in 2016.

“Everybody tells me, ‘Please run for president. Please run for president,” Trump told Republicans at an event. “I would be much happier if a great and competent person came along. I’d be happy if President Obama did a great job. I’m a Republican, but before anything, I love this country. I would love to see somebody come in who is going to be great.”

Trump’s desire for a president who is going to be great automatically rules him out, but apparently no one has told him that. He has already spent $1 million researching a run at the country’s top spot.

We’re sure Republicans know what they’re doing, but look, if you know one, give them a hug. Look that conservative in the eyes and ask them how they’re doing. It might help them. Sometimes just knowing someone cares is all it takes to stop spiraling.

Donald Trump Continues to Bash New York

It’s Friday, so why not discuss a moron? A little over a month ago Donald Trump ranted that New York was “boring” and “will die in the near future” and now he’s back at it again. Only this time, he added New York columnist Jonathan Chait to his list.

.@nymag is a piece of garbage but I think it is very nice & charitable that they employ the no-talent illiterate hack @jonathanchait.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 17, 2013

The problem here (well, one of the problems) is that to be a hack, you sort of have to be literate. But hey, it was a nice try.

During a talk at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Jill Abramson showed off some fresh media slang, so try and keep up, suckas. If you’re in the media business, you better educate yourself of the following, via Capital New York:

Snowfall (verb): To create an amazing digital feature, such as the Pulitzer-winning “Snow Fall” piece published by the New York Times last December. “Everyone wants to snowfall now, every day, all desks,” said Abramson.

Pizza Story (noun): A complex, breaking news story that requires extensive reporting. “The pizza boxes stack up,” when such a story happens, explained Abramson.

Now we know you’re wondering if these are real slang terms or just nonsense. But trust us. If you use either and your colleague or editor questions their validity, don’t even worry about it. They need to check themselves; not you.

The Atlantic Kicks Off Ebook Effort With Jonathan Rauch Memoir

The Atlantic is debuting its ebook initiative on Wednesday with “Denial” by Jonathan Rauch, a memoir of following the author’s unexpected trek to discovering at 25 that he is gay.

The Atlantic Books, the new imprint, will publish several long-form stories this year, the magazine said in a press release. Details of the next publication will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Over the two decades that Jonathan has been writing for The Atlantic, he’s produced revelatory articles on everything from politics to foreign policy to, in our current issue, end-of-life care. But this book is his most powerful work,” James Bennet, editor in chief of The Atlantic, said in a statement. “We are honored to make it the debut title of The Atlantic Books.”

Rauch, a contributing editor at the magazine, chronicles his quarter-century of denial, living in an inverted world “where love is hate, attraction is envy, and childhood never ends. He comes to think of himself as a kind of monster—until one day, seemingly miraculously, the world turns itself upright and the possibility of love floods in.”

“Denial: My Twenty-Five Years Without a Soul” is available now exclusively onKindle Singles and soon via Nook, iBooks, and Kobo for $1.99. For more information, please visit www.theatlantic.com/denial.

Adam Savader, Former Romney Campaign Intern Arrested for Sexploitation, Shares Anderson Cooper’s Breaking News Problem

Three obstacles stand in the way of former Mitt Romney campaign intern Adam Savader‘s political career.

Being arrested for allegedly cyberstalking young women and blackmailing 15 of them into sending him nudes

A creepy smile — a smile some may say should have indicated his potential for sexploitation and the fact that we missed it a sign of the Obama administration’s degradation of national security (we’re lookin’ at you, Lindsey Graham)

A breaking news problem

Last week, BuzzFeed’s Dorsey Shaw diagnosed Anderson Cooper with a “breaking news problem,” abusing the terms to describe news events that were neither new nor breaking.

The boy-who-cried-wolf use of the term has, as Shaw put it, rendered it all but meaningless.

continued…

Former NY Times Publisher’s Fifth Avenue Co-Op Sells For $12.5M

The Fifth Avenue co-op owned by Arthur O. Sulberger, the former publisher of The New York Times, has sold for $12.5 million, $1.5 million less than its original asking price Bloomberg reported.

The deal for the four-bedroom at 101 Fifth Ave. was completed on April 11. It was listed last December for $14 million.

Sulzberger died last Sept. 29 at his home in Southampton after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 86.

But he left behind a legacy at the Times, having morphed the company into a publicly-traded multimedia firm with television, radio and magazine assets.

Michael Wolff: The NY Times Book Review Is Dying

Michael Wolff — the eloquent, if prickishly pugnacious media commentator — has forecast the end of yet another aging publication: The New York Times Book Review.

In his Monday column on The Guardian, Wolff forecast the demise of the last freestanding national book section, in much the way he has predicted the inevitable death of The New York Post tabloid.

“[W]hile the NYTBR has been at the very center of the book business in New York and has been the most influential voice in book culture for the better part of a century, it is surely hard to say quite what to do with this weighty history,” he wrote. “Not to mention, how to squeeze a buck out of it. The New York Times has other things to worry about.”

His news peg? The new editor, Pamela Paul, whose credentials he must consider laughable for taking over such an esteemed position.
