Slake Launch Party

Last night your FBLA editors hit the launch party for Slake, Los Angeles’ new quarterly journal. The event packed downtown’s Caña Rum Bar with local literati, among them Jonathan Gold, Cecil Castellucci, Marc Cooper, David Rensin, and Elline Lipkin.

Tuesday Night’s Mediabistro Cocktail Party

Media types descended on Elevate Lounge in downtown Los Angeles last night for an industry get-together. Your FishbowlLA editors were there, cocktails in hand, to work the crowd.

FBLA editor Pandora Young, Gary Scott of KCRW, and Gabe Friedman of the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

Scott is a producer for “To The Point” and “Which Way, LA?”, so we had to ask – Does Warren Olney look like Don Draper? Cause that’s what we imagine when listening to him on the radio. All slicked back hair and steel gray suit, a martini in one hand and a microphone in the other. “Er, not exactly…” Scott replied.

LA Times Magazine Cocktail Party

LAmagparty11.jpg
We were just trolling around in WeHo keeping an eye out for this rumored plague of Republicans with RNC “make it rain” money when we stumbled upon the Pacific Design Center where there just so happened to be a cocktail party and screening for LA Times Magazine.

Pictured are Los Angeles Times Magazine Editor Nancie Clare (in black sweater) and Managing Advertising Director (Los Angeles Times Magazine), Shelley Cole in the suit on right.

The screening was also the April cover story, a short film titled “Tell-Tale” directed by Greg Williams. It was a film noir interpretation of Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart,” but because this is Hollywood, there were three people titled with “idea by” credits. Not one of them Edgar Allan Poe.

Sam Zell: Tribune is Doing Really Well

sam-zell-billionaire-real-estate-mogul122.jpg
Oh Sam Zell, so rich and just so rich.

Benzinga.com reports:

One of Zell’s major holdings is the Tribune Company which publishes The Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. The company is currently in bankruptcy. Zell said that “Tribune is doing really well,” and he is optimistic about the company’s future. He added that Tribune could emerge from bankruptcy as early as the end of the first half of this year.

It seems like only last week there was another slaughter fest over there. Oh wait – it was last week. Well, you hack and chop and hack and chop in the hopes of being more profitable. Don’t know how that fits into the assessment of “doing really well.” But okay.

We hit the Pacific Design Center last night for a party celebrating the recently published book Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity Worldwide. The book was authored by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the first married couple to win a Pulitzer for journalism. How cute is that? Only Kristof attended the party, however – his wife, he explained, was home taking care of the couple’s three children.
