CBS Correspondent Lara Logan Brutally Assaulted in Egypt *

Horrific news. A CBS reporter was physically beaten and sexually assaulted on Friday in Cairo’s Tahrir Square following the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Foreign correspondent Lara Logan was covering the story in Egypt for “60 Minutes” when her team was surrounded by a mob. From the CBS release:

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

Logan is one of dozens of journalists attacked during the protests in Egypt. Our hearts go out to her, and any other women assaulted by opportunistic rapists during the chaos. Mubarak may be gone, but there is still plenty to protest.

*CORRECTION: Yesterday I reported that Logan had been raped. The CBS statement made no mention of rape. I made an irresponsible assumption while reporting on an emotional issue, and I apologize for spreading misinformation. The post has been amended to reflect the known facts.
