Daily Breeze Columnist Gets the Obituary He Never Wanted

There are a lot of wonderful quotes in Larry Altman and Douglas Morino’s tribute to Daily Breeze colleague John Bogert, who passed away over the weekend at age 63 after a battle with cancer. But the comment that stands out is this one:

This obituary, daughter Rachael said, would not have thrilled him. Bogert didn’t much like it when reporters wrote sappy obituaries and portrayed the deceased as “saintly.” He wanted his own obituary, she said, to be honest. “My dad never wanted to come off as a saint,” she said.

And so, Altman and Morino dutifully segue from the praise for a couple of paragraphs, quoting some negative reader comments. It’s rare and in this case fitting to throw in some bitter with the sweeet.

When Bogert retired in June from a Daily Breeze career that began in 1979, his colleagues put together a booklet of well wishes from readers who enjoyed his 6,500 filings over the years. He took receipt of the booklet just last week and was able to read it, poolside in Pasadena. RIP.
