Daily News for the NYE Story Win

Shutterstock_DalaiLamaIf the following plot elements were scripted in a Hollywood romcom, they would likely have critics rolling their bleary eyes. A couple meets on New Year’s Eve, 2008. Five years later, their second child arrives one second after midnight local time January 1 and is christened with a name suggested to the parents by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

That’s the gist of Ben Chapman‘s item today in the New York Daily News. If there is such a thing as a charmed New York life, Metok and Dorjee Choetso‘s daughter Tenjin would seem to have a screaming head start:

To get the Dalai Lama’s recommendation for a name, the Queens couple phoned a secretary for His Holiness, who then asked the spiritual leader for a suitable moniker.

Dolma said expecting parents of any faith can reach out to the Dalai Lama for a name suggestion. “It’s a good luck charm for the baby,” she explained, noting that her first daughter, Tenzin Choezey, was named the same way.

Whoops, wait a minute. The couple has two daughters named Tenzin with a Z and Tenjin with a J? We can already hear the future excuses. “Sorry, mom, dad… I thought you said Ten[insert other consonant]in.”
