NYPress Uncovers Disturbing Underground Monogamy ‘Trend’

Of late, we can barely be bothered to read the ever-thinning New York Press, which has become a shadow of its former self. But it was hard not to pick up this week’s issue, with its three somewhat-naked people on the cover and the tagline “The New Underground Monogamy.” Had we missed a major trend here? Since when has monogamy had to go into hiding?

A look inside at the article assured us we hadn’t been missing out on the “next cool thing” by gleefully flitting from one New Yorker to the next these past months. Turns out the piece is really not about monogamy at all, but a contrived trend piece about sex parties that are allegedly attracting “faithful” monogamous couples. And (whew!) near the bottom we find out that “rigid monogamy is as outdated as homophobia.”

Despite its poor case that swinging is any more a trend today than it was in the past (um, Plato’s pimpage?), the cover will likely generate a little single-issue bump for the Press — a couple fewer bales of unread papers to send back to pulp — as the city’s undersexed pore through the article to try and find out how to get to said parties. And hey, maybe it’ll even attract some more hooker ads.

Blog Editor Refuses To Give E-Mail Address To Star Jones

While attempting some mild research on Star Jones, we found ourselves on Jones’ Web site — or, as she calls it, “the only dictionary that defines me.” But unless you’re willing to give Jones and/or her Webmaster your e-mail address — this dictionary is nothing more than a flash intro. You can’t even view her bio — making it about as useful as TimesSelect.

A Christian Devil Wears Prada?

As you may have heard, the film version of A Devil Wears Prada opens today, facing box-office competition from another journalism-related film, Superman. As such, the Christian Broadcasting Network points us its review of Superman (“You don’t have to dig too deeply to realize that Superman is obviously a Christ-figure”) but we were more interested in its review of A Stich In Time, which, judging by its book cover and tagline (“Dee Decker is out to prove that a middle-aged Christian woman can be faithful, fashionable, and fabulous”) might be Christianity’s answer to Anna Wintour.

Which would give new meaning to the “blood” used for those PETA fur protests, now wouldn’t it?

French Lawmakers Approve iPod Law

Parisian lawmakers want your iPod to be compatible with Napster.

Via AP:

PARIS (AP) — French lawmakers gave final approval Friday to legislation that could force Apple Computer Inc. to make its iPod and iTunes Music Store compatible with rivals’ music players and online services. Both the Senate and the National Assembly, France’s lower house, voted in favor of the copyright bill, which some analysts said could cause Apple Computer Inc. and others to pull their music players and online download stores from France.

The vote was the final legislative step before the bill becomes law — barring the success of a last-ditch constitutional challenge filed last week by the opposition Socialists.

Apple had called the bill “state-sponsored piracy” earlier this year.

Animal Reimagines Brangelina As Several, Needles Radar

Bucky Turco‘s Animal refuses to die. Err, “grovel like Radar.” Having “finally scraped enough money together” to print issue #7 — the “Wildlife” issue to be released this weekend — Animal depicts Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on its cover as a bird and full-lipped rhino, respectively. Turco and co. also use the occasion to coin the term “celebimal,” with Paris Hilton, George Clooney and Lindsay Lohan reimagined as human-animal hybrids.

Turco, however, grovels in another way: “As part of what we hope to be a spin off gimmicky marketing angle, we are asking for a $1 donation via pay pal if people download the PDF version (and happen to like it).”

Turco’s e-mail announcement of the issue:

“On my second day, I found myself on the 12th floor waiting for an elevator with Anna. I have to laugh now at the memory. Feeling naively confident in my Loehmann’s-bought Armani, I stepped inside along with her when the doors opened, smiled brightly, and gave her the most enthusiastic, “Good morning!” I could muster. She didn’t flinch—she simply turned and faced the back corner and remained there for the long, silent ride to the lobby. By the time I got back to my desk, there was a message summoning me to my boss’ office.”

While it’s common media-world knowledge that one boards the same elevator as Wintour at her own peril, the fact that she went all Blair Witch on Clehane—literally turning to face a wall rather than simply ride in stony, forward-facing silence—is a new twist.

We recently heard this tale from Clehane in person, and can vouch for the fact that she’s not a walking hunk of stone, despite Wintour’s reverse Medusa. However, since their paths crossed back in the 80′s, we’d posit that Wintour had yet to reach the pinnacle of those peon-vaporizing powers she so deftly wields today.

Star On Barbara On Today: She’s Still In My Heart

We caught the tail end of Al Roker‘s interview with Star Jones on Today today, and Jones — at least on the surface — appeared to be in hatchet-burying mode, saying she was grateful for the opportunity View co-host and executive producer Barbara Walters gave her, and that Walters would always be held close to “my heart.” Of course, this was not how she appeared yesterday.

Today producers — always suckers for synergy — followed up that segment with an expert on female relationships and backstabbing.

Glam CEO Says Traffic Will Surpass All Fashion Sites In July

Glam.com CEO Samir Arora — whose network of women’s lifestyle and fashion blogs is backed by over $11 million in private equity — says the site will become number one in the fashion category on the Web next month. Glam.com is already bigger than Style.com, he says.

“We will be bigger than anyone in July,” Arora told FishbowlNY over coffee. The always impeccably dressed Arora has some experience in building big Internet ventures — he built Tickle.com, which he sold in 2004 to Monster.com for a pretty penny, after developing a similar money-maker with a company called NetObjects earlier. He says he got into this because he sensed a business opportunity that wasn’t being exploited on the Web. And because he loves fashion.

Glam.com, which Arora launched eight months ago, has already attracted some big advertisers, like Gucci, Target and — surprisingly — Cosmopolitan, which would seem to be a competitor. The site brings together “affiliate” fashion blogs — which accounts for much of Arora’s traffic claim — sells ads across them and shares in the content and revenue.

Isobella Jade: The FishbowlNY Interview

Yesterday, we reported the story of Isobella Jade, the 5’2″ homeless model who has been pitching — in third person — Almost 5’4″, her tragic-cum-triumphant memoir of her struggle as a height-challenged model, written entirely in heels at the SoHo Apple Store, around town.

We had but a pair of follow-up questions for her:

1. How were you saving your files?

2. Not to belittle your struggle in any way — seriously — but how are you “perhaps the most successful model in nyc under the height of 5’4″” and still living out of a suitcase?

Isobella’s e-mailed response, written, presumably, from the Apple Store in SoHo:
