‘Where Have All the Models Gone?’

So asks the “first Asian supermodel” Anna Bayle, displaying a bunch of covers — from Glamour, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue — with illustrations instead of real live humans. But she’s really wondering why it’s now all actresses and celebrities, and no longer models, who grace the covers of the high-end women’s glossies. Her theory, in short:

“When one group gets more powerful than the other, then the balance of things change. Every other group will react to this movement and there will be changes. I think, when a model starts earning more than fashion editors … it’s a problem. When a model becomes more important and gets more press than the designer showing…it’s a problem. So what is the state of fashion shows now? — Very young girls with developing personalities showing $80,000 garments. ‘Walking zombies’ is the phrase I always hear. I believe the fashion world is refusing to give that power to the models right now because the models (and their agents) have abused their celebrity.”

Dow Jones to Change Breaking News Policy

According to a memo to staff, a new group has been established at publisher Dow Jones to cover breaking business news for the Newswires, Online Journal, and often for the company’s print publications. The move signals a big shift at the company: by putting all of the spot news coverage under one umbrella, the company will ensure that multiple stories aren’t being written about the same news, and will free up time for reporters and editors at the Wall Street Journal to write longer, more analytical pieces. The full release:

YouTube is for Older People

It’s all a bunch of teens and tweens and maybe twenty-somethings uploading and downloading and forwarding YouTube all over, right? That’s a “misconception” writes Jack Myers in his Media Buzz email newsletter today, quoting a still unreleased eMarketer study:

“Until now we’ve been operating under the misconception that YouTube’s audience looks like Lonelygirl15. Just as the teen dream was unmasked as an actress performing in a scripted, if clever, work of fiction, eMarketer’s just published study, Internet Video: Advertising Experiments and Exploding Content, reveals that 55 percent of YouTube’s U.S. audience falls within the 35 to 64 age range, not exactly Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Even more surprising is that these viewers are affluent; 61.5 percent banked over $60,000 per annum. While this is bait for advertisers who are slowly shifting their ad dollars from broadcast to the Internet, it’s bad news for television, which has seen this age demo running for the exits.”

Garfield: ‘Because Zimbabwe Was Booked Solid’

So, why was On the Media in Turkey? Because show co-host Bob Garfield had another reason to go. Here’s his answer:

“Because Zimbabwe was booked solid.

“Har har. Actually, in my capacity as an ad critic for Advertising Age, I go around the world giving speeches — lately about the collapse of the old media/marketing model before the Brave New World is built out. (I call it “The Chaos Scenario.”) Over 20 years, I’ve done 80% of my on-location NPR reporting (100s of pieces from, like, 25 countries) while on Ad Age business. This trip I was in Oslo, then Istanbul. Freedom of speech in Norway isn’t a big issue, so I decided to focus on Article 301.”

Article 301, of course, being … oh, yes, the part of the Turkish penal code which criminalizes “insulting Turkishness” and is often used to prosecute writers and journalists.

She lays bare the truth behind bagging musicians, while writer Peter Hyman strives to keep the beat:

Did you sleep mainly with drummers or guitarists?
The thing about drummers is that they are easier than guitarists. There is less competition for them, and they are easier to please and not used to the attention.

I used to play drums. What’s the difference between celibacy and chastity?
Celibacy is static. It’s a state of grace, where nothing penetrates you.

Off the Media: Turkey, Elections and Repeats

On the Media this week couldn’t resist the post-Thanksgiving pun, when Bob Garfield (do we have to call him co-host every week?) went slightly outside the usual Mideast sphere for a visit to Turkey, where he revealed that the press still isn’t completely free — though things are better.

Ana Marie Cox (still funny for us to hear the Wonkette referred to as Time.com) expounded on the nuance behind the election headlines: some of the Dems elected were conservative, and the all-important “swing voters weren’t thinking so much about the Iraq war; they were thinking about wanting a change for a lot of different reasons,” like corruption (which you already know if you paid attention).

And a couple of reruns, one on the create-a-pundit industry of media coaches by John Solomon, and a another from New Yorker Jay Rosen, speaking about “legacy media … saddled with an outdated or heavy infrastructure in an age when to be nimbler and lighter might be a lot better.”

Creative Director Lowe Leaves Life & Style

Jossip has word that Life & Style creative director Tom Lowe has left the building. This comes a mere day or so after general manager Mark Pasetsky was called on to replace editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum, who was all sorts of ousted on Tuesday for reasons that aren’t entirely clear. Are still more on staff considering heading for the hills? Will the shuffle up top delay the launch of L&S‘s upcoming shopping site? For all the ShopVogue.com comparisons and dispute over how much Life versus Style fueled the moves, will it just wind up being another way to disseminate Kitson merchandise, the crack rock of the celeb-obsessed set? Stay tuned…

Rich Media: ‘No Place’ in Magazines?

We were at the Digital Magazine Forum yesterday, which started two years ago as a place for people trying to put versions of their publications online to gather. Online versions are not websites, but rather the stuff you might see in a “reader” like Zinio or Nxtbook or Qiosk or Texterity or Olive or or or …

And because we were there — moderating a great panel with bloggers Peter Rojas and Om Malik, and Web editoriorial managers Tom Groppe of The Deal and Laura Rich, soon to be of Portfolio — we are catching up today, so we don’t have a lot of time to write.

A few things were revealed:

Om’s coming out with a new blog Friday that will be about TV, and another about games.

The Wall Street Journal is going to within a week or so launch a blog on work-life balance. And they just bought 10 new video cameras.

Time’s Peter Meirs is scary smart and gets to play with the coolest stuff in his job.

Cyndi Stivers is doing some sort of entrepreneurial venture. Stay tuned.

Bo Sacks is a funny guy, in addition to being smart about the magazine industry.

Adobe’s Bill McCoy defines a magazine as “editorial, branded, timely, collected, text-centric content.” And to an advertiser “a vehicle to reach a set of users who pay attention to a particular [content area].” Sounds to us like that could be a blog.

Users don’t want to use online readers, and the numbers of subscriptions for at least some of them are going down. People, in Meirs’ words, don’t want “digital facsimiles” of magazines — it is, he said, like trying to look at a magazine with a piece of reflective glass over it.

Also, Dan Schwartz, our host and a man who’s accomplishments we were amazed to read — certificat from a Parisian institute, Columbia MBA, B.U. JD and a stint as in the Army — said that rich media has “no place” in magazines. OK, but, Dan, what about when someone writes a movie review? Wouldn’t a user like to see the clip in question? Or a critique of George Bush. How about some speech excerpts. And so on.

Video: Screw‘s Al Goldstein: ‘This Is What a Washed-Up Pornographer Looks Like’

WARNING: The above video contains language that is extremely explicit and so not suitable for work (SNSFW)

Last night in lower Manhattan, a sparse crowd of about 20 gathered in a corner of McNally Booksellers to hear a 70-year-old pornography legend, Al Goldstein, of Screw and Midnight Blue fame, read from his memoir, I, Al Goldstein: My Screwed Life. Except, Goldstein didn’t read anything. Bankrupt, drug-addled and certifiably insane, he embarked on a 22-minute, sometimes-coherent rant that was equal parts biographical, tragic, funny, scary, pathetic and beyond vile. In other words: Exactly what we expected.

For those of you who’d rather not view the above video (see disclaimer) here are some of the things we learned:

Goldstein would like to meet a woman so he can perform oral sex on her. And take her to the movies.

Goldstein lives in a Howard Beach apartment paid for by Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller.

The Internet put Screw out of business.

Goldstein’s ghost-writer and documentarian, James Guardino, looks uncomfortable when Goldstein talks about … well … anything.

Pair Of Billionaires Trying To Buy NYT Co.?

While investors have told him it would be next to impossible, Hank Greenberg and an unnamed investor appear to be buying up shares of the New York Times Co. with the goal of buying the entire company from the Sulzberger family. CNBC’s Power Lunch:

SUE HERERA: CHARLIE GASPARINO JOINS US NOW WITH HIS STREET STORIES THAT HE’S HEARING ABOUT THE REPORT IN THE NEW YORK POST, CHARLIE, THAT HANK GREENBERG IS BUYING SHARES OF NEW YORK TIMES COMPANY. YOU THINK HE WANTS TO BE MORE THAN JUST AN INVESTOR HERE, RIGHT?

CHARLIE GASPARINO: YEAH, I THINK THIS STORY GOES BEYOND HIM TRYING TO BE AN ACTIVIST SHAREHOLDER TO GET THE FAMILY TO PRODUCE MORE PROFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, HANK GREENBERG IS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN TRYING TO BUY THE ENTIRE NEW YORK TIMES COMPANY. THAT HE HAS APPROACHED INVESTMENT BANKERS AND ASKED THEM IF THEY WOULD WORK FOR HIM SO THEY COULD PUT TOGETHER SOME SORT OF A PLAN TO TAKE OVER THE NEW YORK TIMES COMPANY. NOW, INVESTMENT BANKERS HAVE TOLD HIM IT WOULD BE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE. IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, BECAUSE LET’S FACE IT, THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS TWO CLASSES OF STOCK, THE FAMILY CONTROLS THE VOTING STOCK WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR HANK GREENBERG TO COME IN THERE OR ESSENTIALLY ANY INVESTOR TO COME IN THERE AND BUY THE COMPANY. BUT GREENBERG IS INTENT ON PUSHING THE ENVELOPE ON THIS.

Why?

Sources said Greenberg views the Times, which has a market cap of $3.3 billion, as a top-flight brand but one with an “artificially depressed” stock price.
