Her book talks about the housing bubble and the mortgage mess, but today she talked about how many main stream journalists missed the building drama. “No one else at the time was connecting these mass foreclosures in Ohio to this booming market in mortgage securities on Wall Street,” she said.

Now the places in the country that are doing the worst — still — are inland California, Florida and the Cleveland area, Katz said. “I think we have to look very closely about what’s happening in Washington and what isn’t happening there,” she said. “Right now why some areas are being hit so hard is that we’re in a zero sum scheme. Basically its the lenders and the financial institutions that finance them and the lenders on the other side. And anything that is done without direct government money to help homeowners means that the banks lose. And as you know our banking system is in very precarious.”

Just last month, the magazine’s parent company, Vibe Media Group, announced the launch of spin-off The Most!, a “celebrity fashion, lifestyle, red-carpet moments, travel, and news” publication that was due to hit newsstands earlier this month. There’s no word on whether Vibe‘s shut down will affect that publication as well.

Publicists at the magazine were unavailable for comment, but we’ll keep you updated as the story progresses. If you have any information, leave it in the comments below or email us.

Vibe‘s closure leaves The Source as the one remaining one of the few remaining magazines covering hip hop and R&B, after Blender folded earlier this year. (A commenter kindly pointed out that Giant and XXL still cover the industry, and there might be others that we don’t know about.)

Update: The New York Times has word from Vibe‘s publicist that the magazine will close down operations today, although there is no word on how many people will be losing their jobs. And here is part of an internal memo sent by Vibe Media Group CEO Steve Aaron to staffers today: “It is with a heavy heart that I share some tough news, VMG is closing down effective today, June 30 due to lack of additional financial investments.” So, it looks like Vibe won’t be the only publication to go. If the whole media group is closing up shop, it looks like The Most! is dead, too.

Lastly, Ron Mwangaguhunga spoke to Vibe editor at large Rob Kenner for his blog The Corsair. Kenner revealed that the magazine had been working on a Michael Jackson tribute prior to its demise. How much more depressing can it get? The magazine’s own death prevented it from celebrating the death of the legend who was so influential to the music that Vibe covered.

After appointing a new CRO to the group, which publishes trade pub WWD, last week and assigning a new publisher to Footwear News the week before that, Beckman yesterday named three new associate publishers to the women’s wear publication.

Erica Bartman, Paula Fortgang, and Elizabeth Webbe Lunny will all take on roles of associate publishers at WWD starting July 13. All three women join Fairchild from various positions at Conde Nast, which owns the smaller fashion trade publisher. They have all worked with Beckman during his career there, he said.

“Erica, Paula, and Elizabeth are some of the best professionals I have worked with in my time at Conde Nast,” Beckman said in a release about the appointments. “Each will bring great intelligence and intensity to their new positions at Women’s Wear Daily.”

Amanda Michel, editor of distributed reporting at nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica.org, has helped shape the emerging world of citizen journalism with her work at The Huffington Post‘s Off The Bus project. Off The Bus became an integral part of the election season’s news and helped break a number of important stories about the candidates and their campaigns. Now Michel is working on a project for ProPublica that tracks the stimulus money and where its being used and whether promises made by government officials hold water.

FishbowlNY: Why did you decide to use citizen journalists for some of ProPublica’s projects?

Amanda Michel: We believe that the better the relationship we have with the public the better we can do our work. By working closely with your readers you can expand access to information. There are also ways in which you can serve the public. For example, you can show them to look at things critically or give them the tools to do that.

The New York Times was the big winner of the night, with business and financial editor Lawrence Ingrassia receiving the Lawrence Minard Editor Award and the paper and its magazine winning three of the 12 competition categories including the Large Newspaper and Magazine categories and the Best Writing award, which went to Gretchen Morgenson. (Rick Rothacker of The Charlotte Observer also won in the Best Writing category.)

The Wall Street Journal and CBS News’ “60 Minutes” both took home two awards each, and now defunct business magazine Portfolio earned one win in the Feature Writing category for Michael Lewis‘ story “The End.”

New York Times: More information about the lengths the Times went to to keep reporter David Rohde‘s kidnapping off the media’s radar: Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales joined in the effort to monitor Rohde’s Wikipedia page and delete any references to the kidnapping.

Folio: Hachette Filipacchi Media is reorganizing its automotive brands, Car and Driver and Road & Track, under the Jumpstart online network purchased in spring 2007. The structure of the new Jumpstart Automotive Group will be similar to the new structure implemented for Hachette’s women’s and shelter titles.

The first panel of the afternoon was moderated by The Nation‘s Ari Melber and featured social media experts Amanda Michel of ProPublica.org, NPR‘s Andy Carvin, Twittervision’s Dave Troy and Andrew Turner of GeoCommons.

The panel discussed using crowd sourcing and citizen journalists to report and develop stories. These tools were the key to covering stories like the 2008 election cycle and the inauguration festivities. The group talked about why citizens want to get involved, deciding that involvement can be attributed to many different factors, from political motivation, curiosity or just to check where tax dollars are being spent.

“Sometimes imminent danger motivates people,” Carvin said, adding that more than 500 people volunteered to report news and information for NPR in the days leading up to Hurrican Gustav’s landing last year.”But I can’t get people on board a hurricane project for this year until there is a storm about to hit.”

Michel, who worked for the Huffington Post‘s Off the Bus project during the election last year, said that although she needs to check information from politically motivated sources carefully, sometimes they make the best sources.

“It needs to be an issue they care about — either they or their friends or family is involved — something there to pull them in,” agreed Turner. “They are not going to get involved just because it’s in front of them.”

Although the awards, presented by WHY and Mediabistro, will be awarded at a ceremony in New York in September, only one New York media outlet was named a winner. The New York Times‘ Lydia Polgreen received a Judge’s Award for her work on “The Spoils,” an in-depth article about the Congo and the renegade troops that control the mineral-rich area.

Other award winners include The Washington Post‘s Debbie Cenziper and Sarah Cohen and CQ Weekly‘s Aliya Sternstein.

Earlier today, a federal judge sentenced Madoff to 150 years in prison — the maximum sentence. Madoff’s attorneys had requested a 12-year sentence, citing his age of 71 years. But the seemingly endless sentence handed down today speaks to the seriousness of Madoff’s crimes, and there was reportedly applause in the courtroom when Judge Denny Chin announced his decision. Now, he will definitely be in jail for the rest of his life.

Prior to the handing down of his sentence, Madoff was confronted by a number of his victims, who spoke of their experiences after losing their life savings in the investor’s scheme. Of course, the New York — and international — media was there to capture it. Today on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu, hosts Jason Boog of GalleyCat and Matt Van Hoven of AgencySpy were joined again by FishbowlNY editor Amanda Ernst.

The podcast opened with talk about Michael Jackson and how Amanda and Matt are covering his death on their blogs. Matt then spoke about infomercial pitchman Billy Mays, who died suddenly yesterday, and his impact on the advertising industry.

The group also discussed author Alice Hoffman‘s decision to post a book reviewer’s phone number and email address on Twitter after she disagreed with a review of her book “The Story Sisters.”

Lastly, Matt brought up a news report that ad sales on television was down. The group discussed the implications of decreasing ad sales across all of media and how journalists need to adapt in order to survive the slow death of traditional media.

Tomorrow, Jason and Matt will welcome author Alyssa Katz, who just debuted a new book about real estate in the U.S. “Our Lot.”
