• WebNewser: You might want to try and avoid this movie theater if you’re ever over in Taylor Falls, Minnesota.
Tsunami Story Hits Twitter and CNN, Washes Past Times

About an hour after Twitter began surfacing reports of a 7.0-level earthquake strike off the coast of Okinawa in Japan and CNN placed the story at the top of the site, The New York Times has yet to place a story about the event on its homepage. As of this posting, the Times was still running a story about New York Governor David Paterson‘s announcement that he would not seek a full term as governor following a scandal that broke late Wednesday night. The Times has picked up a Reuters item filed at 4:11 p.m and an AP story filed at 5:08. The words “Okinawa” and “Tsunami” do not appear on the Times‘ front page. One iteration of “Earthquake” appears, in an unrelated story about buildings in Istambul that are vulnerable to tremors.

The earthquake struck at 3:31 p.m. EST, about 50 miles East of Okinawa. According to CNN, Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a recommendation that people head away from the coastline.

At 4:54, All Headline News reported that there was no significant damage from the earthquake and the tsunami warning had been lifted.

Did the Times show excellent editorial judgment by giving the story a higher placement, or did it let one get by them?

Ad Exec And Former Adweek Bureau Chief Andrew Jaffe Has Died

Our own AgencySpy reports that former Adweek bureau chief Andrew Jaffe has passed away at the age of 71. Jaffe had been battling multiple myeloma for nearly a decade.

After graduating from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Jaffe worked for the Associated Press, where he gained notice for his coverage of the 1965 Watt Riot. Before joining Adweek, Jaffe worked as both a domestic and foreign correspondent for Newsweek, later becoming the magazine’s bureau chief. Jaffe has also acted as head of the international advertising Clio Awards, and worked as an advertising and marketing consultant, opening his own firm, Compass Consulting, in 2003.

His family has requested donations be made to the Andrew Jaffe Scholarship Fund at the Brandcenter, Virginia Commonwealth University or to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital in his memory.

WSJ Already Gunning For Times Local Ad Dollars

Looks like Rupert Murdoch has made a small step forward in his effort to bring The Wall Street Journal into an all-out brawl with The New York Times. AdAge reports that the Journal‘s forthcoming New York metro section has secured advertising deals from Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman.

According to AdAge, the Bloomingdale’s news is of particular interest, too, because the retailer currently spends much more on Times ads than it does on the Journal. Bergdorf would also be a major plum, because it doesn’t currently spend any money at the Journal.

Plus, with advertising budgets hit hard by the recession, the duel for placements in newspapers is pretty much a zero-sum game; if the Journal makes headway, the Times will probably suffer.

Sally Quinn Doesn’t Care That You Find Her (Former) Column Irrelevant And, Frankly, Kind Of Embarrassing

Sally Quinn (of the “Sally Quinn” Quinns), the Washington Post columnist whose column, “The Party,” was recently scrapped, says she has “absolutely no regrets” over writing about, like, how her great-aunt’s second cousin’s niece’s friend’s husband’s mother-in-law’s goldish doesn’t know how to use Google Calendar.

Quinn, you may recall, wrote a piece chronicling her family’s scheduling issues in response to a question no one had asked and criticism no one had dealt. “The Party” was then over for Quinn.

When asked about the incident by Politico, Quinn responded “I have absolutely no regrets at all.”

Quinn added that the column was never meant to be a long-term endeavor and was, instead, meant to focus on “holiday entertaining” and faith and “the generosity of the spirit.” And then Sally Quinn turned a mediocre somersault and hissed at a passing car.

Times’ Third Strike a Knockout: Paterson Says He Won’t Seek Full Term

It’s official: The New York Times has taken down the governor. In a televised speech this afternoon, David Paterson announced he would not seek election. His decision, reported earlier today by the New York Post, comes on the heels of a scandalous Times piece that caused allies to waver in their support and editorial boards to call for his resignation.

Variety Scraps Bad Movie Review For $400,000, Is Basically Yelp

Variety has a bit of explaining to do after it was revealed that the magazine removed a negative movie review from their web archives for money. The movie in question is Iron Cross, which follows an NYPD cop as he tracks down the SS officer who killed his family during the Holocaust. The film happens to be the last movie by the late Roy Scheider, who passed away during production.

As the Los Angeles Times reported last November, the film’s writer and director, Joshua Newton, struck a deal with Variety in order to position the movie as a possible Oscar contender:

Survey: B2B Editors Poorly Trained to Handle Digital Publishing

Despite the increasing importance of digital media for all kinds of publications, many editors of B2B publications consider themselves relative luddites, according to a recent survey.

The American Society of Business Publication Editors along with the Medill School at Northwestern recently asked 273 B2B editors how well they thought they were keeping up with digital innovations in publishing. The results were not exactly encouraging. Eighty percent of respondents said that they took part in one day or less of corporate-sponsored digital training during the last year. Thirty-six percent said they received not a lick of such training.

The Atlantic Redesigns Web Site

The Atlantic‘s Web site has a new look, and a few new features. The magazine announced today that it had redesigned its site, and lo and behold, an updated force for news on the Internet.

The redesign adds a few new features, including a navigation panel that organizes stories into various themes, such as “Politics,” “International,” and “Food.” Two new recurring features, “Other Works of Genius,” and “The Interns Recommend,” also make their debut. Beyond that, users should have an easier time posting comments thanks to new software, and they’ll find that when they mouse over some links, the previews of what’s in store will pop up.

The Atlantic has over the past couple years been taking steps to revamp its visual presence, both on and off the Web. Readers may remember back in late 2008 when the print editions got a facelift to mixed reviews.

The Snowpocalypse Puts A Freeze On NY Media

New York City, for those of you who were not aware, is currently blanketed by approximately 783.4 feet of snow and it. Just. Keeps. Falling. This means that many in New York media have decided to take something of a snow day, a few in both the literal and figurative sense.

Fashion designer Tory Burch put on her Huffington Post Contributor Hat (available at The GAP) today to blog about snow. “Here’s hoping for a snow day,” she mused musingly, “so I can take my boys to Central Park for a snowball fight and then to Serendipity for frozen hot chocolate. As much as I dislike the cold I do love the snow.”

Lindsay Kaplan, Time Out New York‘s publicity manager, announced via Twitter that several of the publication’s departments were taking a snow day, leaving many worried that the staff was busily mushing to their respective corner bodegas for 40s and Hostess cupcakes instead of formally settling age-old debates. When Mediabistro’s own PRNewser responded to the Tweet, Kaplan made it clear that a lil’ snow doesn’t stop TONY.

Then there’s the New York Post, whose photo editors, as the good people at Animal so helpfully pointed out, used a picture of the Philadelphia City Hall to illustrate an article on The Snowmageddonapolypalooza. (Then again, the NY Post does mention that the storm impacted everywhere “from Philadelphia” to Not Philadelphia.)

Stay warm, everyone.

Survey: Frat Bros Read Sports Illustrated, Sorority Chicks Read Cosmo

Occasionally, scientific inquiry reveals that young men and young women approach the world in different ways. More often, media research accomplishes this, as is the case with a recent nationwide survey by Student Monitor on undergraduates’ magazine-reading habits. The result: Boys like Sports Illustrated, girls favor Cosmopolitan. Shocking!

In a nationwide survey, Student Monitor interviewed 900 undergrads, 150 men and 150 from each grade. The goal: to see what, if any, magazines this crucial demographic reads between games of beer pong and screenings of The Big Lebowski.

Perhaps the most revealing stat from the survey, conducted in October 2009 and released to Student Monitor’s clients three weeks ago, is Sports Illustrated‘s dominance among males and Cosmopolitan‘s hold over females.

In subscriptions, SI was far and away the best at getting young men to pay for magazine delivery; twelve percent said they subscribed. (Is the swimsuit issue that compelling?) Next was Men’s Health (7.5%), then ESPN (6.5%).

Cosmopolitan held a tight grip on women, with 12% of respondents saying they subscribed. That placed the glossy well ahead of runner-up Seventeen (7.6%).

Student Monitor also found that 74% of all students read at least one magazine from a provided list of 31 general circulation titles. Meanwhile, 37% say they subscribe to at least one magazine.

More highlights from the report after the jump.
