New York Daily News to Expand Local Coverage

Starting next Thursday, the 10th, the Daily News will include a new section titled “Uptown News,” which will cover Harlem, East Harlem, Inwood, and Washington Heights. JoAnne Wasserman is Uptown News’ Bureau Chief, and the section will be published every Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

In addition to Uptown News, the paper is expanding its local section overall, increasing outer borough coverage from one day of the week to every weekday and Sunday, starting next Monday, the 7th.

Kevin Convey, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily News, said the expansion is due to consumers wanting more:

The Daily News borough sections have been bringing New York’s communities to life every week and our readers want more of that personal connection, which is why we’re expanding our community coverage to bring them the latest news from their neighborhood every day and adding a new section for the residents of Manhattan’s uptown communities.

Imagine – a New York paper providing coverage of Harlem and the outer boroughs almost every single day. It’s almost like the Daily News is saying that those who live there matter, but we’re still awaiting official word on that.

Vanity Fair Readers Prefer Women

When it comes to buying Vanity Fair, it’s all women, all the time, according to a MIN online report. The magazine’s best-selling issues from 2010 all featured women on the cover, with August 2010 (featuring a profile of Angelina Jolie) selling the most.

The Jolie issue sold over half a million copies, followed by Lady Gaga (460,056), Meryl Streep (447,000), Grace Kelly (417,000), and Marilyn Monroe (408,700).

The worst selling issue for Vanity Fair was the June World Cup Preview, which had half-naked soccer stars Ronaldo and Drogba on the cover. It sold only 269,000 copies, proving that Vanity Fair readers are more interested in women and (once again) Americans really don’t like soccer.

Update: Double Dose of Curtis Sliwa at The Apple/WNYM

Beginning tomorrow, Curtis Sliwa will add afternoons to his radio work at The Apple/970 AM WNYM.

Sliwa, already helping listeners with their commute to work from 5 to 9 a.m., extends his day with a 5 to 7 p.m. show.

In the afternoon, he’ll be joined by journalist Gerson Borrero. The duo is familiar to New Yorkers for co-hosting on NY1.

“Curtis Sliwa & Gerson Borrero’s segment on TV is wildly popular and to bring this format to radio is terrific.” adds program director Peter Thiele. “Gerson’s voice in the Latino and NYC progressive communities is without parallel and thankfully now everyone will be able to get his perspective for two hours a day in a debate format with New York icon Curtis Sliwa. New York is the most interesting city in the world, and New Yorkers deserve a live and local talk show about the issues people really care about.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Sliwa would be part of the station’s weekend lineup as well.

Tina Brown Adds Peter Boyer and Wayne Barrett

Sidney Deane, the hustler charachter from White Men Can’t Jump, once said, “I don’t mean to brag, but I’m the greatest!” After today, FishbowlNY imagines Tina Brown might want to add that quote to her repertoire as well.

The Newsweek/Daily Beast venture she’s in charge of keeps adding elite talent, showing that Brown knows how to put together a winning squad. The latest additions include Peter Boyer from The New Yorker and Wayne Barrett, most recently from The Village Voice.

According to Jeremy Peters at Media Decoder, Boyer will be a correspondent for news and politics, and Barrett will do what he does best – investigative reporting.

Once the Newsweek/Daily Beast entity gets launched we fully expect Brown to send out an email to competitors with the subject, “It’s hard work makin’ you look this bad.”

Gabriel Snyder To Run The Atlantic Wire

Gabriel Snyder has been put in charge of The Atlantic Wire, the magazine’s digital component and news aggregation site. In his new role, Snyder will compile real time news stories and help lay out the day’s headlines for the site. While The Atlantic and theatlantic.com are located in DC, Snyder will work out of Manhattan’s Madison Avenue and is expected to add 15 new hires to work under him. Snyder explained the benefit of a New York home base.

For the same reason that a lot of places based in New York want a DC bureau, because they want people steeped in the culture of DC, I think this will bring [to DC] people who are more attuned to what’s going on in New York.

Snyder, a former contributor to Variety and W, has resided in New York since 2008 when he served as editor-in-chief of Gawker – a stint that lasted until his untimely dismissal last February. He then found work at Newsweek where he ran the magazine’s website, however — due to the magazine’s sale to Sidney Harman in August — he only lasted five months in that role.

Hearst Purchases Lagardére Magazines for $887 Million

Okay, now it’s official. Hearst Corporation announced this morning that it has acquired over 100 of Lagardére’s magazines, in a deal that has been talked about for quite some time now.

The question of what happens to Elle has been answered as well – Hearst will have publishing rights for the magazine in 15 countries, including the United States.

Hearst is paying $887 million for the titles, and all is expected to close by the beginning of the third quarter.

Nothing like starting off your Monday with a multi-million dollar deal. What happens next for the Hearst execs? How do you even top this? FishbowlNY bets it involves donut holes.

Rabbi David Nesenoff Named Editor Of The Jewish Star

Rabbi David Nesenoff has parlayed his role in a major media story into an editor role at the Garden City-based Jewish Star. Last May Nesenoff interviewed Helen Thomas at a Jewish American Heritage Month event at the White House and asked the journalist if she had “any comments on Israel.” Thomas responded with the now infamous words “Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine” and “Go home [to] Poland, Germany and America, and everywhere else.”

In June Nesenoff published a story on his discussion with Thomas on his blog RabbiLive.com. The news of Thomas’s inflammatory remarks resulted in her resignation from her position as a columnist for the Hearst Corp.

WABC Brings New Technology With Updated Helicopter

WABC is getting close to unveiling a new helicopter for coverage on its newscasts. The latest version of “Newscopter 7″ will feature state-of-the-art technology.

The station has begun running promos showing the new chopper.

However, a Channel 7 spokesman says there’s no timetable for when it will be ready for air, as engineers are fine tuning the broadcast equipment.

One detail the WABC spokesman did pass along is the chopper is a Bell 407, “and that makes it the most powerful Newscopter 7 we have ever had.”

Wizard Entertainment Shutters Wizard And ToyFare Magazines

FishbowlNY received a tip today from former Wizard magazine features editor Andrew Serwin informing us that both Wizard and ToyFare titles have printed their last issues. The two magazines have been in circulation for nearly two decades and received some public acclaim, however in recent years both have dealt with issues of unpaid bills and widespread layoffs. The two magazines will be replaced by an online publication titled Wizard World.

Founder and CEO of Wizard Entertainment Gareb Shamus released a statement claiming that this move will provide readers with the type of content they are seeking on a modern platform.

This is a very exciting day for Wizard World and the industries it serves. The new digital magazine Wizard World will give consumers the content they want in a magazine format with which they are familiar, but distributed in a form that is always available at any time on any device. It is a natural evolution for us in this market.

Wizard World will debut sometime in February.
