Two New York Articles Get Optioned

International Creative Management (ICM), through its partnership with New York magazine, has brokered a deal with Sony Pictures TV to option two articles from the magazine; perhaps one day turning them into a TV show or movie.

The New York Observer reports that the two articles are “A Serial Killer in Common,” by Robert Kolker, which details the Long Island serial killer’s victims and their connections, and “Paw Paw & Lady Love,” by Dan Lee, a piece on the tragedy of Anna Nicole Smith.

As you can see, Hollywood loves a sad story.

Vanity Fair Launches New E-Book on Rupert Murdoch

Everything Rupert Murdoch is in vogue right now. Profiles in magazines, TV talking heads examining his health, Rupert Bobblehead Night – if you’ve got something about News Corp.’s man, you’ve most likely got yourself a hit. So it’s no surprise that Vanity Fair’s second e-book ever takes an in-depth look at the man.

Rupert Murdoch: The Master Mogul of Fleet Street, takes 20 selected pieces from the pages of Vanity Fair and puts them in one, tiny electronic place (it’s available on the Kindle or Nook).

The book documents Murdoch’s journey from Fleet Street until now, and includes works from Sarah Ellison, Edward Klein, James Wolcott, and Michael Wolff and more.

Notes From The AP’s Deputy Standards Editor

The Washington Post has a great profile of David Minthorn, the Associated Press’ Deputy Standards Editor this morning. Minthorn is the man responsible for policing the grammar used by the AP, and because of that, he’s answered just about every question concerning the English language there is.

The most common question he’s answered is about when to use quotes and when to italicize (the AP never italicizes, but that’s due to formatting issues more than anything else), but here’s a few other interesting items from the Minthorn piece:

It’s “bed-and-breakfast”

There was a lot of arguing when the AP switched from “e-mail” to “email”

The plural of “meatloaf” is “meatloaves.” No word on if Meat Loaf refers to his children this way or not.

Earlier a rumor began floating around Twitter that CNN had suspended Piers Morgan. Immediately journalists tweeted and retweeted the news, because media people always love being the first (or close to first) to report something. Now that the rumor has been proved false, those same journalists are backtracking – none more ridiculously than Reuters’ financial blogger Felix Salmon.

While some people who tweeted the rumor – such as Anthony De Rosa – went the right route and simply apologized for the error, Salmon took to his blog and basically said it’s okay for journalists to tweet false information:

…One of the things I like about Twitter is that it behaves in many ways a lot more like a newsroom than a newspaper. Rumors happen there, and then they get shot down — no harm no foul.

He adds that because the false information doesn’t come from a professional account, it’s all good. But it’s not. People obviously make mistakes, but to tweet something wrong and then say, “Oh, well it’s fine” when people follow you because you’re supposed to be a credible news source, is wrong.

If Salmon doesn’t want that responsibility placed on his account, he should remove “Felix Salmon is the finance blogger at Reuters” from his Twitter bio. Until then people are going to give more weight to what he tweets, whether he likes it or not.

60 Minutes Take Weekly Top Spot on WCBS; America’s Got Talent Number Two on WNBC

As we meander through the summer, viewership is typically altered. But 60 Minutes had no problems grabbing ratings. The venerable newsmagazine was number one, according to the Nielsen Company. The broadcast had 751,000 WCBS/Channel 2 viewers with a 3.7 rating.

On WNBC/Channel 4, a two-hour episode of America’s Got Talent was number two (623,000/3.1).

Yankee Baseball on the YES Network was third (556,000/2.8) from July 21. Several other games cracked the Top 20.

A pair of games tied for number 13 –July 18 on YES (473,000/2.3) and July 19 on WWOR/Channel 9 (468,000/2.3).

A July 20th Yankee game on YES was number 20 (416,000/2.1).

More from the Top 10 after the jump
