Scientologists Ape The New Yorker

A group of Scientologists staked out the Conde Nast building this morning and handed out an issue of the organization’s magazine Freedom, which was a parody of The New Yorker. Animal New York says that the issue is jam packed with articles attacking the Scientology piece by Lawrence Wright that appeared in the New Yorker in February. If you haven’t read that yet, please do, it’s fantastic.

Aside from some nice art work, it looks like Freedom has awhile to go to catch up to the quality of The New Yorker, but you have to give them credit for trying.

No seriously, you have to. If you don’t Tom Cruise will personally come to your apartment and jump on your couch. Trust us, it’s awkward.

Michelle Obama Graces The Cover of October Essence

According to Essence, Michelle Obama is one of the most influential black women in 2011, and we couldn’t agree more. The First Lady is featured on the cover of the magazine’s upcoming October issue (all by herself Oprah! Imagine that!), and inside she delivers a great message to young girls and women everywhere: That life is as good as the work you put into it.

“My story to young people around this country and around the world is, don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago,” she tells Essence. “Because I was there, and this is attainable.”

C’mon! How could you ever say anything bad about this woman? We love her. If you’ve got a problem with her then you’ve got a problem with us.

Mrs. Obama also provides the magazine with exclusive photos from her trip to Africa and gives other insights on her journey to essence.com as part of its diary feature.

Constance C.R. White, Essence’s Editor-in-Chief, said, “Michelle Obama is the quintessential Essence woman; impressively defining herself on her own terms.”

The issue hits newsstands September 12.

Gary Starr Named New CFO of Newsweek/The Daily Beast

Adweek is reporting that Gary Starr — previously with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, as its Senior Vice President of Finance — is replacing Jennie Tse Wang as the CFO of Newsweek/The Daily Beast. Prior to Martha Stewart, Starr was at Time Inc. for 10 years.

Wang is reportedly moving on from Newsweek/The Daily Beast.

Former Bloomberg Radio Morning Anchors Ben Farnsworth and Peter Schacknow Knew Something Was ‘Very, Very Wrong’ as They Covered 9/11

During an 11-year span in the 1970s and 1980s, Ben Farnsworth (left) was known to millions as the afternoon co-anchor at WCBS NewsRadio 88.

But it was at Bloomberg Radio/WBBR where Farnsworth informed listeners about the tragedy of 9/11.

FishbowlNY continues our exploration of the tenth anniversary with 9/11: New York Remembers.

“It was just amazing,” Farnsworth says. “It just kind of came out of the blue.”

The day was even more bittersweet for the veteran Farnsworth.

“The irony is that 9/11 is my birthday,” Farnsworth tells FishbowlNY. “It certainly affects my life every year on my birthday.”

Farnsworth did morning drive with Peter Schacknow from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The team was only in its second week together when the attacks shocked the city.

Elle and H&M Team Up

More fashion news girlfriend! Elle has teamed up with H&M to give consumers a chance to buy select pieces from their upcoming fall collection on the magazine’s website. WWD reports that starting at noon today, elle.com will show four new looks and allow consumers to purchase some items from each outfit.

In the past, if you wanted to buy something from H&M online — say, this sweater that would probably complete your picnic table look — you were out of luck, so this is big news for the company.

A spokesperson said shoppers can expect more to come. “This will be a preview of what’s to come in spring 2012, when we launch our e-commerce site,” said Nicole Christie.

Ralph Lauren Buys Solo Spot on The New York Times’ iPad App

As you can tell by our pictures, your FishbowlNY editors are quite the fashionistas. Fishbowl Jerry is (maybe) wearing Gucci and I am (perhaps) wearing Marc Jacobs. So when we read that Ralph Lauren had purchased a solo sponsorship of The New York Times’ iPad app for September, we were giddy. Or whatever. But it is a great idea, and since this is the first time the app has been sponsored by one advertiser, it will certainly gain Ralph Lauren some buzz.

Ad Age reports that Ralph Lauren is taking full advantage of the app. During the month, anyone can access the app’s Fashion & Style, Travel, Home & Garden, T Magazine and Sports sections for free, and Ralph Lauren will also be hosting a live stream of its Fashion Week runway show during the week of September 15. For the straight ad experience, there will be an interactive spread that lets users purchase Ralph Lauren items right from the app.

As Ralph himself put it, the company went big. “Obviously you’re always offered a simple ad following another ad,” he explained. “We said, ‘That’s not what we want.’”

WNBC/Channel 4 Makes Scheduling Switches Early, Thanks to Irene

WNBC/Channel 4 already had plans to bring news back at 5 p.m. That’s not new. But given the necessary saturation of news late last week as Hurricane Irene had New York City in its crosshairs, WNBC decided to debut its reconstituted 5 p.m. broadcast without fanfare.

A WNBC spokesperson tells FishbowlNY that the station wanted to keep the momentum going with their new anchor team, Shiba Russell and Tom Llamas.

WNBC had previously announced that the 5 p.m. newscast would start September 12th.

New York Live, hosted by Jane Hanson and Sara Gore, made its leap to 3 p.m. on Monday.

Tropical Storm Irene Takes WNYC-AM Off Air

You’ve heard about the numerous power outages in the tri-state area from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene. The widespread flooding also took its toll on many homes and businesses.

One of those businesses that felt the wrath of Irene was radio station WNYC. The AM station had been off the air since Sunday morning at 9:30.

Late Tuesday afternoon WNYC-AM began the process of getting on the air, returning at low power.

A WNYC spokeswoman says the antenna system suffered extensive damage.

While repairs continue, WNYC says listeners can also find them on their FM counterpart at 93.9, and regular AM programming is being streamed online at www.wnyc.org.

Christian station WMCA, with its antenna in Kearny, New Jersey, not far from where WNYC’s antenna is located, also was knocked off the air.

SportsNewser: Bill Belichick and his staff were miked-up for the entire 2009 season for an NFL Films feature. Too bad it wasn’t from the 2007 season, we would’ve loved to get some tips on how to cheat in the NFL.
PRNewser: Colorado has declared September “Ethics Month.” Feel free to be unethical in all of the other months.

Howard Stern’s High Pitch Eric Enrolling in Mediabistro Class

We’re not big Howard Stern listeners, but when we heard that High Pitch Eric was going to enroll in one of our classes, we thought it was worth noting. If you’re not familiar with Eric, he (obviously) has a really high-pitched voice, and now he wants to become a reporter. He heard about our class run by Jon Leiberman, he wanted in, so he signed up.

Here is a link to the class, which starts in November. If you’re want to learn about investigative reporting, you should check it out. Leiberman has won an Emmy for his work, so the guy knows what he’s doing. And if nothing else, you can say you were in a class with High Pitch Eric.

New York Times Photographer Has Legs Blown Off, Takes More Pictures

Joao Silva, a photographer for The New York Times, was working alongside troops in Afghanistan last year when he stepped on a landmine. The explosion cost him both his legs, but what did Silva do immediately after it happened? He took three pictures and then called his wife:

Immediately, there were medics working on me. I picked up a camera, shot a few frames. The frames weren’t very good, quite frankly, but I was trying to record. I knew it wasn’t good, but I felt alive. Adrenaline kicked in. I was compos mentis; I was on top of things. So, I made some pictures. I dropped the camera, then I moved to Plan B, which was to pick up the satellite phone. I called my wife, Vivian, and told her, ‘My legs are gone, but I think I’m going to live.’

That’s just a small part of the amazing speech he gave on August 2 at the Bronx Documentary Center. The Times has posted much more, and it’s well worth the read. Silva is gracious, humble and inspiring.

Without journalists like him, we don’t get the amazing coverage of events that we see each day online and in print. Reading his speech will definitely make you remember that.
