WPIX management had very little to say about the situation except that Watkins “remains employed by WPIX.”

However, sources say Watkins, who became weekend anchor in 2010, is not permitted back in the building, let alone the studios.   

In addition, sources say Watkins’ former weeknight colleague Kaity Tong is handling the weekend anchor duties on a temporary basis beginning tomorrow night.

Tong has been reporting from the outer boroughs each night. She also has been a frequent fill-in for Jodi Applegate.

Peter Ruttgaizer makes his debut on MSG Plus when the Isles open their season Saturday, October 8  at the Nassau Coliseum against the Florida Panthers.

“Peter has a real passion for hockey and we are confident he will bring a terrific energy to our Islanders telecasts,” said Dan Ronayne, executive vice president and general manager, MSG Networks.

Ruttgaizer, a Toronto native, spent the past three seasons as a host and reporter for Altitude Sports Network in Denver, and was part of the network’s coverage of the Colorado Avalanche. Ruttgaizer has also worked for CBC Sports, EastLink Television, TSN in Winnepeg and CTV in Toronto covering professional and junior hockey as well as the CFL.

Ruttgaizer takes over for Deb Placey, who switches to hosting and reporting for the cable network’s New Jersey Devils telecasts.

“I’ve always respected and admired MSG Networks, and the Islanders are a hockey team with a great history, so I’m honored to have this opportunity,” said Ruttgaizer. “MSG Networks has two of the premiere sports and entertainment networks in the country and I’m excited to get started with Howie, Butch and the talented production staff.”

Mark Hoyer is the Editor-in-Chief of Cycle World, and his magazine will now be in Bonnier’s Outdoor Group, under Vice President and Group Publisher Eric Zinczenko.

Remember Crystal Harris? She’s the ex fiancee of Hugh Hefner, and she made news by dumping poor Hef five days before their wedding, back in June. Hefner then got a little revenge by pasting a huge “Runaway Bride” sticker on the Playboy issue that featured Harris on the cover. Now it appears that it’s Harris’ turn for some fun.

According to TMZ, she’s auctioning off her engagement ring at Christie’s next month. The ring, which features a huge 3.39 carat diamond, is expected to get Harris anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000. Hefner might not have the best taste in clothes, but clearly the guy knows how to buy a ring.

Wolff is still scheduled to speak at a number of events starting on Monday (which, cruelly, is his one year anniversary at Adweek) for Advertising Week, so perhaps he’ll be around for a little bit longer.

There’s also some buzz that Wolff might not be the only one getting the axe. Adweek’s Publisher, Erica Bartman, is getting flak for ad sales dropping after the redesign launched.

Sources with knowledge of the situation say Watkins, the station’s solo weekend anchor, was abruptly terminated Tuesday by news director Bill Carey.

We’re told that Watkins is no longer permitted in the WPIX building on 42nd Street.

Watkins, who joined WPIX in 1998, was part of the long-running evening anchor tandem with Kaity Tong. However, with the arrival of Jodi Applegate in October 2010, Watkins was relegated to weekend anchor.

Before arriving at WPIX, Watkins anchored various newscasts for WNBC/Channel 4. 

There’s no word of who will replace Watkins on weekends.

The season premiere of the CBS comedy had an estimated 1.9 million New York viewers and a 9.7 rating, according to Nielsen.

WCBS held down second place, thanks to the New York Jets game in Oakland (1.4 million/7.2).

Channel 2 also scored with the season premiere of 60 Minutes, which featured a profile of NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly. The venerable newsmagazine tied for number four (1.2 million/6.4).

The Emmy-winning Modern Family nailed down third and fourth position with an average 1.3 million WABC viewers and a 6.5 rating.  

Channel 7 viewers welcomed Dancing With The Stars. The two-hour season premiere landed at number six (1.2 million/6.2). The Tuesday night result show had an eighth-place finish (1.1 million/5.4).

Harper’s Bazaar

Esther Levy-Raphael comes from Good Housekeeping, and is Harper’s Bazaar’s new Director, Programs and Partnerships. Erin Pollard, most recently with Modern Luxury Media, is now Account Director, American Fashion and Retail. Sam Griffin is the magazine’s new Creative Services Director. Griffin, like Livsey, comes to Harper’s Bazaar from Bon Appétit.

We have more details on the West Coast plans for Lolita Lopez. The WPIX/Channel 11 veteran has been named a general assignment reporter with KNBC in Los Angeles. Our sister site TVSpy reports that Lopez’s first day is October 10.

Lopez, as we reported earlier this week, was relieved of her WPIX contract for the KNBC opportunity.
