Real Housewife Melissa Gorga Dishes on Her Sister-in-Law From Hell

Slow moving holiday tourists and presidential motorcades be damned. Nothing could keep the faithful away from Michael’s today. With the place decked out in its holiday finery, the mood was like a swanky office party on steroids. While the usual suspects and a cool visitor from California (producer/composer David Foster) huddled over their tables deep in conversation, there was a little lunch for 14 in the middle of the dining room. I snagged one of the guests, Melissa Gorga, my favorite ‘housewife’ on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, for a chat about the knock-down, drag-out cat fights on last month’s reunion show and to get the real story about her on- and off-camera relationship with her fellow cast mate and sister-in-law, the charming Teresa Guidice.

Melissa, who is an absolute knockout in person, told me that the RHONJ cast (minus Jacqueline Laurita) shot the reunion special the day after wrapping the yet-to-be-aired Season 4, and the women were all seething about battles and betrayals the viewers haven’t even seen. “We had just had a huge blow up the night before, and that was what was on everyone’s mind. It was so hard not to say anything. That’s why Jacqueline wasn’t there,” Melissa tells me. “It was very confusing for us, and we were constantly trying not to say things about things that hadn’t aired yet. Bravo is so sorry they shot them back to back. I don’t think they are ever going to do that again.” Teresa “tried to set me up” and is back to her old tricks, Melissa told me, without giving anything away. After all the kissing and making up seen at the end of last season, Melissa’s husband Joe Gorga is “disgusted” with his table tipping sibling once again. Big surprise.

Instead, Kevin Martinez has joined the magazine as Vice President, Publisher.

Martinez has been serving as a consultant to Details since the summer, and before that was Vice President, Brand Publisher at Elle.

“Over the past five months we’ve made great strides in the print, digital and social areas of the brand,” said Martinez. “I am thrilled to be able to build on that success with Dan Peres and the entire Details team.”

Newsweek iPad App Coming in January

FishbowlNY has learned that Newsweek is launching an iPad app in January. To help the debut go smoothly, the magazine has hired Melissa Lafsky as its iPad Launch Editor. Lafsky has the chops to make the app a hit; she’s worked at The Huffington Post, edited the Freakonomics blog and has written for The New York Observer, The New York Times and Wired.

Details are sparse (we do know that print subscribers will be able to access it for free) but Dirk Barnett, Creative Director at Newsweek, said a broad goal of the app is to expand on the design elements found in print. “Newsweek’s iPad app will enhance the strong design landscape of the magazine, building on the visual strengths with interactives, video elements and an extension of the strong photojournalism that has been a hallmark of the magazine for decades,” explained Barnett.

Local NBA Season to Begin Minus Marv Albert

With the 149-day NBA lockout on the path to ending over the weekend, the season will be salvaged with a Christmas Day start. The only remaining issue is for the league and the union to iron-out a new collective bargaining agreement.

For many weeks, fans were subjected to revenue sharing and economics 101.

But there is a bigger picture with the NBA likely to resume next month.

There will be no Marv Albert calling local NBA games, after decades in the broadcast booth. But Albert, 70, announced in June that he would leave the YES Network to concentrate on his new NFL gig with CBS. He’s still the top broadcaster of NBA action on TNT. He joined TNT in 1999.

Not many years removed from his Syracuse University days, Albert hooked up with the Knicks in 1967. Virtually every season for the next 37 years, Albert was the lead voice, either on radio or TV. continued…

ESPN The Magazine to Debut ‘Interview’ Issue

Your FishbowlNY editors are big sports fans, but we have to be honest, most interviews with professional athletes are a bit dry. This should be expected — they’re paid to run fast in brightly colored clothes, slam other men on the ground and hit a ball with a stick, not give complex answers — but somehow we’re always disappointed in what they say.

That’s why we’re excited to read ESPN The Magazine’s first “Interview” issue, which hits newsstands Friday. We’re hoping that the interviews found inside will be more revealing than the stuff we usually hear or read.

From what we know already, there is bound to be plenty of good answers in the issue. The magazine gets Aaron Rodgers to comment on his amazing season, Derrick Rose to explain why he stayed away from league negotiations and much more. Some of the other athletes featured in the Interview issue include Justin Verlander, Ozzie Guillen, Usian Bolt, Bernard Hopkins, Danica Patrick and Ed Reed.

Time Inc. Finally Names CEO

The long process of finding the next Time Inc. CEO is finally over. Congrats go to Laura Lang, most recently the CEO of the ad agency Digitas. Lang had been with Digitas since 2008.

The hiring of Lang came at just the right time. Back in July word circulated that the leadership trio of John Huey, Howard Averill and Maurice Edelson wouldn’t be considered for the CEO position, and as the search went on many staffers became worried about what the lack of a CEO would mean for Time in the long run.

Thankfully for them, that wait is over. The Wall Street Journal reports that Lang is expected to be formally introduced at some point this afternoon.

Jason Wagenheim Shifts to Teen Vogue

Last week Jason Wagenheim was abruptly booted as Publisher of Glamour after only three months. The day after the dismissal Wagenheim insisted he was staying at Condé Nast, and we now know that he indeed is — as Publisher of Teen Vogue.

Ad Age reports that he is taking the job from Sabine Feldmann, who has been Vice President and Publisher of Teen Vogue since April of last year. There is no word what the future holds for Feldmann, but sources are speculating that she’ll end up at Details, which has been without a Publisher since Paul Jowdy left. This would be odd though, because David Hamilton was promoted to fill Jowdy’s spot.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear how things shake out.

Socially Troubling | Worth a Try | RIP Maybach

This is a good thing for them because before Twitter they used pagers, and the codes could get pretty confusing. “911411420!” could mean “Bro, hurry up and call me because I know where to get some pot,” or “Bro, the cops know where we keep our pot!”

UnBeige: Banksy tries, but he can’t get people to say that his art is terrible.

Rolling Stone, Us Weekly Coming to iPad

Jann Wenner is finally breaking down and joining the rest of the free world publishing companies by launching iPad apps. According to mocoNews, Rolling Stone and Us Weekly will be coming to Apple’s tablet in early 2012.

Up first though is “The Beatles: The Ultimate Album-by-Album Guide,” an app that will accompany the Rolling Stone book by the same name. The app will be available for $9.99 and feature interviews with musicians, over 60 pictures and — this is completely unconfirmed — a lengthy report on the socio-economical ramifications of naming your child Ringo.

The foray into the tablet world is some rather shocking news, considering that just a few months ago Wenner said magazines launching on the iPad was “crazy.” Perhaps when he heard that the iPad is boosting magazine sales he realized that being a little insane can be quite lucrative.

Mogulite Relaunching as ‘The Jane Dough’

When FishbowlNY first heard about Mogulite — an addition to the Dan Abrams empire — we wondered if more ink dedicated to rich people and CEOs was necessary, since people tend to talk about them quite a bit already.

Turns out it wasn’t, because the site is getting tossed to the side and replaced with something called “The Jane Dough.” The site carries the tagline “The Business News We Knead,” and will “explore the world of business through the female prism.”

Amy Tennery and Hilary Reinsberg, the same editors who ran Mogulite, will continue to steer the ship at Jane Dough. Here’s hoping they direct it away from anymore puns.

November Sweeps Indicate WNYW/Channel 5 Owns 10 p.m.

It was a powerful November sweeps period for WNYW/Channel 5. The Fox outlet, which battles Tribune-owned WPIX at 10 p.m., was the clear victor for the month, and year-to-year.

Delving into the numbers, obtained by WNYW, Ernie Anastos and Dari Alexander outdistanced Jodi Applegate‘s late newscast on Channel 11.

For November, Channel 5 had a 74-percent win in the Households (3.3 for WNYW, 1.9 for WPIX), a 78-percent advantage among total viewers (1.6, 0.9), a 73-percent lead in total Adults 18+ (1.9, 1.1), and a 78-percent bulge among Adults 25 to 54 (1.6, 0.9).

Comparing this sweeps period to November 2010, Channel 5 once again flexed its muscle.

Creative Direction of Tablets Gives Publishers Pause

When designing a magazine app for a tablet, is it best for it to be simple or complicated? The answer to that question is giving companies plenty to think about. Adweek reports that while some publishing houses claimed readers want their apps pared down, others felt that would be a step in the wrong direction.

Authorities at Time and Hearst explained that the KISS principle is the best approach. Steve Sachs, Time’s Executive Vice President of Consumer Marketing and Sales, said, “Interactive elements are valuable to [readers], but they’re a secondary benefit.” Chris Wilkes, the Vice President of Hearst’s App Lab agreed, and added that if an app has too many extras they could end up annoying readers.

Scott Dadich, the Executive Director of Digital Magazine Development at Condé Nast, didn’t see it that way at all. “It’s more effort, it’s more expense, but it does bear out in engagement,” said Dadich. “Something like a GQ, seeing models on a fashion shoot, or seeing the clothes move — there’s definitely value in that.” In line with Dadich’s thinking, the highest rated apps are often those that are also thoroughly enhanced.
