The New York Times Loves NY1

The true test of a New Yorker? Ask them what they think of NY1. If they say that they don’t like the channel, or even hesitate to express their feelings, they are not a New Yorker.

NY1 is the TV soul of New York, and Pat Kiernan is our spiritual leader. And during Hurricane Sandy, The New York Times noticed that, and has lavished praise upon the lovable channel:

It [NY1] gave a disaster human scale, and also projected calm and authority as circumstances deteriorated. Major broadcast and cable networks abandoned their prime-time programming to cover the storm frenetically live, but only NY1’s coverage was unhurried. Over the course of the night, its broadcast became a comforting town square, the coverage not as improvisational as you might expect.

Yes, that’s right! The Times then went on to highlight several NY1ers, including Zack Fink, Jeanine Ramirez, Ruschell Boone, John Schiumo and Dean Meminger. Oh and of course the Times gave a shout out to Kiernan, who by 4:00 am Tuesday “was in a suit and tie behind the anchor desk, keeping the ship steady.”

NYPD Rescues Storm Victims from Staten Island Rooftops

The NYPD has just released this video to the AP. It shows officers rescuing Staten Island residents who were stranded by Hurricane Sandy.

We sometimes give the NYPD crap for how they treat the press, so we owe it to them to offer praise when they do great things. The cops were able to safely rescue five adults and one child.

Keep your head up, New York.

Reddit Might Be Worth $240 Million

Reddit, a site so schizophrenic it can host a chat by President Barack Obama alongside links to cat videos and porn, attracts about 3 billion page views a month. For site that is little more than a collection of message boards, it’s insanely popular. So naturally, people want to know what the site — which is owned by Advance Publications— is worth.

According to Forbes, the number is $240 million:

Advance has recapitalized Reddit, taking the site out of its Conde Nast division and allowing Reddit employees to own a sizable minority of newly issued stock. As part of that recapitalization, Advance bought $20 million of convertible preferred stock in Reddit and put in provisions saying that if Reddit is ever sold for less than $240 million, the conversion terms will be rejiggered so that Advance comes away with a bigger slice of Reddit and employees get less.

Given that Advance bought Reddit for about $5 million in 2006, the company is staring at quite a big payoff should it ever decide to sell.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm, Will Probably Ruin Star Wars Even More

This isn’t really New York centric, but it’s definitely big news. Disney has agreed to buy Lucasfilm — and the entire Star Wars franchise — for $4.05 billion in stock and cash. Half of the payment will be in cash, and 40 million shares will be distributed at closing.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

If the acquisition wasn’t big enough news for you, Disney also announced plans to release more Star Wars movies, starting with Star Wars Episode 7, in 2015.

Should you find yourself upset that Disney bought the beloved Star Wars franchise and is adding more movies to it, remember that Lucas already ruined everything with Jar Jar Binks. It can’t get any worse than that.

Amazing New York Times Graphic Tracks Hurricane Damage

The New York Times is doing a great job covering Hurricane Sandy. There is a lot of information (the paywall is still down) available, but the most interesting is a graphic detailing the damage from the storm.

The page is broken into five categories — Power Failures, Flooding, Wind, Subways and Railroads, and Other Transportation — that you can scroll through to find vital information presented in a unique, yet easily understood format.

For example, the Power Failures section features a map that adds dots that denote people without power, as time elapses.

Give the graphic a look, it’s well worth your time.

Kate Upton has landed her first Vogue cover. The model appears on the November cover of Vogue Italia, wearing something that looks extremely uncomfortable. But hey, that’s fashion! We think.

Upton has now appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, GQ, CR Fashion Book and Cosmopolitan.

New Writers Welcome at The Source

When The Source first launched back in the 80s, it set itself apart from other fan magazines by digging deeper into hip-hop culture. Today, the mag stays true to that, albeit with a broader audience. The freelancer-friendly pub has wider demographics and covers much more of the industry now that YouTube stars are turning rap hits into country covers. And, lucky for you, 60 percent of its content is written by freelancers.

Source veteran Kim Osorio has rejoined the pub as EIC and is committed to working with new and up-and-coming writers. In fact, she estimates that as much as 10-15 percent of the content each month comes from first-time freelancers. “It helps to have fresh ideas coming from people who aren’t in the day-to-day grind of hip-hop,” she said.

New York Times Circulation Jumps 40 Percent

The Audit Bureau of Circulation has released its report for the six month period ending in September, and the numbers looked good for The New York Times. According to the report, the Times’ circulation jumped by 40 percent, thanks to digital subscribers.

The Times’ digital readers — which includes online and those who read on tablets — now total at 896,352, good for the top spot among the 25 dailies the ABC measures. Overall, subscriptions for the daily edition of the Times went from 1,150,589 one year ago, to 1,613,865.

Despite that bump in numbers, the Times is still number three overall, behind The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, which have a circulation of 2,293,798 and 1,713,833, respectively.

Hurricane Sandy Takes Down Gawker Media, Mediaite, HuffPost, BuzzFeed [Update]

Hurricane Sandy hit the city hard, and along with flooding and devastation, several media companies saw their sites go down. All Gawker Media sites, Mediaite, The Huffington Post, and BuzzFeed were down at some point as Sandy made its way across land.

The source of the outage is flooding at Datagram, which houses the servers used by all the sites that went out. “Gawker sites down after power cut off at Datagram, our data center down on Whitehall St. Backup power didn’t kick in fast enough,” tweeted Nick Denton.

The Huffington Post was down, but is now publishing posts on an extremely stripped down version of the site. “Due to power outages caused by Superstorm Sandy, our own website is experiencing technical difficulties,” reads a post on the site.

BuzzFeed is up now, but isn’t being updated. According to their Twitter account, they’re updating content via other platforms, such as Tumblr.

UPDATE:
BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post are both back up.
