WNYC Adds Investigative Reporter

Robert Lewis has joined WNYC as an investigative reporter. Lewis comes to the station from Newsday, where he also served as an investigative reporter.

Previously Lewis worked for the Sacramento Bee, and during his time there was a Loeb Awards finalist.

“Robert brings to the WNYC newsroom a profound indignation in the face of injustice, an equally profound sense of fairness, and terrific reporting and storytelling skills,” said WNYC’s vice president for news, Jim Schachter, in a statement.

Leveson Report Suggests News Corp. Cover-Up

The phone hacking scandal report from Judge Brian Leveson, who examined an exhaustive amount of evidence, proposes that News Corp. actively covered up information about the incident. According to Bloomberg News, the 2,000 page report explains that when News Corp. was presented with the hacking claims, it didn’t do nearly enough to investigate them.

“Questions were there to be asked and simple denials should not have been considered sufficient,” explained Leveson, in his report. “This suggests a cover-up by somebody and at more than one level.”

If you’ve been following the phone hacking story, this will come as little surprise to you. But despite Leveson’s claims, it’s worth wondering if anything will change, and if anyone actually wants it to; at least the way Leveson suggests.

Manhattan Media to Take on The Hamptons

Niche Media’s Hamptons magazine has been holding down that market for years, but come next year, there will be a new title looking to grab some readers. According to The New York Post, Manhattan Media is planning on launching Avenue At The Beach, a glossy targeting all the rich people that call the Hamptons their home (or second, third and fourth home).

Manhattan Media has already named Mark Drucker, the former publisher of the now-shuttered Plum Hamptons, to lead its new magazine.

This is a curious move, considering Manhattan Media is for sale, but hey, you’ve got to give them credit for being ambitious.

Real Simple Names Food Director

Sarah Copeland has been named food director for Real Simple. Copeland is a veteran of the food journalism industry, having contributed to magazines such as Saveur, Food & Wine, and Everyday with Rachael Ray for the past 10 years. She is also a published author and the creator of Edible Living, a food blog.

“Sarah has a diverse food background and an invaluable understanding of how to deliver recipes and know-how across all platforms, from TV to cookbooks to blogs,” said Real Simple managing editor, Kristin van Ogtrop, in a statement. “We admire her simple yet sophisticated approach to food and think she will bring fresh ideas and life-improving solutions to the Real Simple consumer.”

Copeland begins at Real Simple December 3.

Wired Adds Online Entertainment Editor

Laura Hudson is joining Wired as its online culture and entertainment editor. Hudson comes to Wired from ComicsAlliance, an AOL-owned comics site that she founded in 2009.

According to a release, at Wired.com, Hudson will oversee any coverage — from TV shows and movies to video games and books — that falls under the “geek culture” umbrella.

Hudson’s appointment is effective immediately. She reports to Kevin Poulsen, Wired.com’s news editor.

Which Tabloid Described Lindsay Lohan’s Latest Arrest Best?

Lindsay Lohan will never go to jail for a long time. It doesn’t matter what she does or how often she does it. She just won’t. The 26-year-old actress could steal a police car, and when the cops show up to arrest her, snort lines of coke off the hood of the vehicle, set it on fire then slap the first two officers that approach her, and she would still get community service.

If you accept that, then you can start to see the humor in her constant stream of arrests. Those stories are great fodder for newspapers, so FishbowlNY thought it’d be fun to see which New York tabloid described Lohan’s latest stumble the best. Below are a couple choice excerpts from The New York Post and The New York Daily News’ coverage of Lohan getting nabbed by cops for allegedly punching another woman. Josh Rucci Joins Bloomberg LP

Josh Rucci, a former Getty Images executive, has joined Bloomberg LP as global head of content sales, a new role at the company. Rucci had been with Getty Images for the past five years, most recently serving as senior director of media and broadcast for the company’s London office.

“We are pleased to welcome Josh at this important time for Bloomberg, as we continue to sign important new deals with publishers and clients,” said Susan Vobejda, general manager of Bloomberg Media Licensing and Distribution, in a statement. “Josh’s expertise and strong history in content sales make him an ideal fit as we expand our media licensing and distribution deals globally.”

At Bloomberg, Rucci will continue to be based in London and report to Vobejda.

New York Times Treats Its Jerusalem Bureau Chief Like a Child

The New York Times has taken the embarrassing step of providing Jodi Rudoren — the paper’s Jerusalem bureau chief — with a social media watchdog. According to the Times’ public editor, Margaret Sullivan, the move was necessary because Rudoren had used Twitter and Facebook to post some things that got people upset:

…During the Gaza conflict, she wrote one Facebook post in which she described Palestinians as ‘ho-hum’ about the death of loved ones, wrote of their ‘limited lives’ and, in another, said she shed her first tears in Gaza over a letter from an Israeli family. The comments came off as insensitive and the reaction was sharp, not only from media pundits, but also from dismayed readers.
