FishbowlDC: One of the meanest things we’ve ever heard?
Time Celebrates 90 Years

Time turns 90 this week. To celebrate, the magazine has a slew of offerings, including a slideshow/history lesson as taught by Time, an interactive cover feature (tweet your favorite and it’ll show up here) and some birthday advice from Joel Stein.

“For me, 90 is not so much a milestone but evidence that for nine decades Time is always new, always of the moment,” Rick Stengel, managing editor of Time, writes in this week’s issue. “We have to be because we cover the way the world is changing and that never stops.”

Happy birthday Time. Thanks for sticking around and not doing more covers like the one shown here.

Welcome back to another Cover Battle, FishbowlNY’s weekly event pitting magazine covers against each other. Today we have O, The Oprah Magazine versus The New York Times Magazine.

For its latest issue O, well, okay, we’re going to be honest: We only picked this cover because it’s absolutely hilarious. What the hell is going on here? “Surprise, Oprah’s home!” Yo Oprah, being that you’re Oprah, it’s impossible to surprise anyone, even if you’re emerging from behind a door floating in space.

As Pope Benedict Leaves the Vatican, WPIX Provides Live Coverage

All the channels broke in this morning for extended coverage of Pope Benedict’s farewell. However, the stations were all taking network special reports. Not so at WPIX/Channel 11.

WPIX, which could have provided the “counterprogramming” by keeping Jerry Springer on the air, made a good choice. Channel 11, recognizing the historic nature of the pope’s resignation (first time is almost 600 years), had its own coverage.

Morning anchors Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera led the special programming. They were joined on the couch by reporters Mary Murphy and Dan Mannarino, both of whom are headed to Rome for the Conclave of Cardinals next week to select the next pope.

Related: FishbowlNY, Reporters Converge on Vatican City for Election of New Pope

Krishnan did make a faux pas as they came on the air just before 11 a.m. She said the pope was set to leave the Vatican at 5 p.m. Italian time and “11 p.m. our time.” Seconds later, the graphic on the screen made the correction.

Rivera also had hands in the blooper jar by saying, “Certainly, a monumentous day here. Historical day, unprecendented.”

Adding insight to the proceedings was Monsignor Kieran Harrington of the Diocese of Brooklyn.

BuzzMedia Cuts 20 Percent of Staff

BuzzMedia, which bought and then folded Spin, is now laying off 20 percent of its workforce. According to All Things D, the company is going to end up hiring new people to replace some of those who are dropped. The rumor is that about 50 people will lose their jobs today, and sometime shortly after that, about 25 new hires will be made.

In a memo, BuzzMedia’s CEO Steve Hansen called the changes “painful,” but added that they were neccessary as part of a restructuring that includes focusing on a select few brands:

Transformation sometimes requires making very hard decisions. Make no mistake about it, today will be difficult for all of us but our success is dependent upon greater focus on our audience, evolving our portfolio of brands, all supported by powerful technology and data. We need to align the organization around those objectives and today is a first step, albeit a very hard one.

Oscar Night Gives Golden Week to WABC

insidemovies.ew.com

As the sweeps period ends today, WABC/Channel 7 had an easy win leading up to the February ratings block. The prime time figures were released today and WABC/Channel 7 rode the Oscars to victory.

Although the approximately three-hour 45- minute broadcast didn’t end until about 12:15 a.m., enough eyes were glued to Seth MacFarlane‘s first time as emcee. The telecast had an estimated 4 million WABC viewers with a 20.6 rating, according to Nielsen.

But it didn’t stop there. WABC also found Oscar gold in the 90-minute Red Carpet special, notching number two, three, and four in half-hour intervals. The highest portion, obviously, was just prior to the awards show starting with 2.9 million viewers and a 14.7 rating. Cable network E! also charted at number 22 for its Red Carpet coverage Sunday (618,000/3.2).

NCIS was fifth for the week with 1 million viewers and a 5.2 rating.

WNBC made its first appearance in the Top 30 with Law & Order: SVU at 27 (592,000/3.0).

There more from Top 10 after the jump.

WNBC’s Gus Rosendale Invaded By Howard Stern Fan During Live Shot

There is no keeping those Howard Stern uber-fans from getting their few seconds of “fame.” Last night on WNBC’s 11pm news, Gus Rosendale was doing a live shot in front of a Long Island home that exploded.

As he was doing his live intro, a man wandered into the shot and said, “Baba Booey. Joey Boots is gay on Twitter.”

Rosendale tweeted moments later, “Security! Still hit my roll cue.”

The man was not seen when Rosendale returned live to wrap up his story.

AOL COO Resigns, Susan Lyne Joins as CEO of Brand Group

A couple of big changes to AOL this morning. Arthur Minson, COO of the company, is stepping down from his role, and Susan Lyne has been named CEO of AOL’s Brand Group.

Minson was named CFO of the company in 2009, then was promoted to COO last summer. Minson will remain at AOL, but it’s uncertain for how long. “Artie has played a key role in the turnaround of AOL and that will continue in 2013 during the transition period,” said Tim Armstrong, CEO of AOL, in a statement.”

Lyne was most recently chairman and CEO of Gilt Groupe. In her new role she will oversee a variety of brands, including TechCrunch and Engadget. Arianna Huffington will of course continue to run The Huffington Post.

Cablevision Lays Off Dozens in MSG Varsity Restructuring

Bethpage, New York-based Cablevision has laid off dozens of employees in a major restructuring for MSG Varsity.

A source spoke to FishbowlNY under the condition of anonymity as the severance package hasn’t been yet been received.

“Somebody’s got to say this is wrong. To have a conference call [with] only three sentences and click, and you turn in your badges,” the source described the company’s notification to exiting staffers.

The source says the layoffs took place two weeks ago. Cablevision at the time said in a statement that “it is combining MSG Varsity with Optimum Local, the company’s local programming unit. This will result in an expansion of MSG Varsity’s programming line-up to include local public affairs, educational, and Optimum branded shows to complement its powerful line-up of tri-state high school programming, which is available exclusively to Optimum customers.”

The source, though, intimates that the sale of Cablevision will take place in the summer. Three years ago, Cablevision spun off is subsidiary, Madison Square Garden LP to The Madison Square Garden Company led by company chairman James Dolan.

“[He] will announce a new enterprise where the new owners of Cablevision will continue to run News 12 with Pat Dolan in charge,” the source says. “Public access will be eliminated. MSG Network will continue.”

“Yes, there were some positions eliminated as a result of the merging of MSG Varsity and Optimum Local,” a Cablevision spokesperson says. “As for the rest of these allegations, they are anonymous and inaccurate.”

Mika Brzezinski, Miss USA and a Mysterious Stephen Baldwin Sighting

Maybe it was today’s dreadful weather (Will this winter from hell ever end?) or perhaps some boldface names can’t bring themselves to leave the sunny West Coast after the Oscars, but the scene at Michael’s today was pretty much a celebrity-free zone unless you count the random sighting of Stephen Baldwin. The more low-key Baldwin made a curiously brief appearance in the dining room (he didn’t even sit down) before leaving, so we never got the chance to ask him what he thinks about brother Alec Baldwin‘s war with The New York Post, but we did try. There was, however, an interesting mix of bold faced names including police commissioner Ray Kelly and the newly crowed Miss USA Nana Meriwether who, despite leaving her sash and crown at home, looked every inch the pageant winner. Being almost six feet tall certainly helps stand out in a crowd.

I was joined today by Woman’s Day editor-in-chief Susan Spencer and Hearst executive director of public relations Mimi Crume Sterling. Having never met these smart, savvy gals before, we bonded over a talk about our daughters. Susan, like me, is mother to an elementary-school-aged daughter adopted from China; Mimi has a little girl and is about to give birth to her first son any minute (we had our fingers crossed she’d make it through lunch!). We all agreed parenthood is an unending source of material.

Susan Spencer and Diane Clehane

Since joining the magazine in February of last year from Time Inc.’s All You, Susan has made some interesting changes to the magazine. “I’ve fallen in love with the reader,” she says. This is not your mother’s Woman’s Day, although Susan is mindful of the generational connection between readers of the 75-year-old Hearst title. “Some readers have been reading the magazine for 60 years, and now their daughters and their daughters’ daughters are reading it,” she explained. When asked just who is the Woman’s Day reader, Susan told me: “She’s the ‘Average Josephine’ — the receptionist, the administrative assistant, the teacher, the nurse. These are the women who I consider to be the backbone of America.” That doesn’t mean, however, these women (more than half work outside the home) are not interested in fashion and the good things in life. Just the opposite. “These women have a lot of joy in their life. They embrace positivity,” says Susan. “That’s why the title of the magazine is so perfect for them. It’s about her day and the joy she gets out of it.” To tap into that, Susan retooled the fashion pages focusing more on value in all its iterations. “Our reader doesn’t want to see a great shoe and then find out it’s $300 or even $150. It has to make sense for her life.” In fact, “Value Tags” appear throughout the magazine to highlight steals, deals and all-around great ideas.

One week ago, Rob resigned from WCBS as the scandal grew.

Ashley returned to her post yesterday on CBS 2 This Morning, formerly opposite her husband. Now occupied by Chris Wragge on a fill-in basis alongside Mary Calvi.

Last week, Rob took to social media and spoke to other outlets, including FishbowlNY, professing his innocence. Morrison’s attorney, Robert Skovgaard says the couple won’t be granting interviews for the foreseeable future.
