Donnie Simpson Wants Less Booty Shaking on BET

This week The Village Voice asked the thought-provoking question: Does a black television network have a responsibility to do better? The bad publicity surrounding the Black Entertainment Television stinker originally called Hot Ghetto Mess, but abruptly changed to We Can Do Better (Averted Gaze), continues.

Former BET host Donnie Simpson stopped by NPR’s Tell Me More show raising some of the same concerns expressed in Chloe A. Hilliard’s Voice article. Simpson spoke to NPR’s Michel Martin on the Viacom-owned station, ”I wish it were a little less of the booty shaking … of the gangsterism … I just wish (BET) did more things that put African-Americans in a more positive light.”
