There is probably no one who feels worse right now in all of New York than Tommy Flynn. In an exclusive News 4 report by government affairs reporter Melissa Russo, the stone-cutter and engraver takes full responsibility for inverting the birth year of New York’s beloved former mayor. Instead of 1924, the inscription on the gravestone Flynn worked on for eight months with Ed Koch reads 1942.
Former Koch chief of staff Diane Coffey, one of a small number of people already aware of the mistake, tries to make the best of it in the NBC New York report. “Ed Koch used to say, ‘It’s always important to correct the record,’” she told Russo. “There is something ironic about that. He’s probably looking down and just chuckling.”
Flynn told Russo that as long as the weather is good in the next few days, this particular incorrect record will be fixed in time for the well-attended annual July 4 events at Trinity Church cemetery.
Update – 06/18/13: No doubt due largely to the media attention, the mistake has been rectified well ahead of schedule.
