FBLA Exclusive: Bo Bice Prefers Pinto Beans to Paparazzi

American Idol runner-up Bo Bice has signed on to be a counselor this summer at Idol Camp, a summer camp in the San Bernardino mountains that caters to musically gifted kids between the ages of 10 and 15.

To promote the camp (which is accepting applications through April 18) Bice spoke to FBLA about what he’s learned about the media since becoming a celeb three Idol seasons ago.

Why do you think American Idol became such an instant cultural phenomenon? If you watch, the majority of movies, the conflict is always someone overcoming the odds. That’s what we want to see. We want to see the little guy prevail. I still feel like I’m the same Bo as before. I still love pinto beans and corn bread. … If it weren’t for American Idol we wouldn’t be talking today.

How did you deal with sudden media attention? For the most part, 90 percent of all my media (interactions) have been positive. I’m honored that people even want to ask me what’s going on. [He just got back from playing for the troops in Afghanistan, started a record label called Sugar Money and is expecting his second child -- in case you were wondering.]

What about that other 10 percent? I think one of the only things that gets to me is there are some of them that shove cameras in your face and have derogatory things to say about your mother or your wife or your kids … just to try to get a rise out of you to get that eight second sound-bite. But I kill everybody with kindness. They say something to me, and I say, “God bless. Have a good day.”
