FishbowlNY is filing this week from South By Southwest, the annual interactive, film and music media festival melt in Austin, Texas.
For 10 years, the Onion — our favorite area satirical newspaper — has sent its writers to South By Southwest as members of the media (their A.V. Club, for instance, filed a showcase-by-showcase account of last year’s blowout).
The festival and longtime sponsor, the Austin Chronicle (whose founders Nick Barbaro and Louis Black co-founded SXSW) have always welcomed the Onion alongside traditional media members with bona-fide press passes. Not this year — we hear the Onion writers were denied press passes and are paying their own way.
Why the sudden change? Could it be because the Onion used the occasion of this year’s SXSW to announce the launch of an Austin edition, the eighth such iteration of its satirical paper?
