Feds Threaten to Crack Down on Medical Marijuana Ads

As you may have heard, U.S. attorneys in California are planning on cracking down on medical marijuana collectives and the landlords who allow pot shops to operate. According to California Watch, the Feds next target is medical marijuana advertising in the California media.

U.S. Attorney Laura E. Duffy, whose district includes Imperial and San Diego counties, said marijuana advertising is the next area she’s “going to be moving onto as part of the enforcement efforts in Southern California.” Duffy said she could not speak for the three other U.S. attorneys covering the state but noted their efforts have been coordinated so far.

“I’m not just seeing print advertising,” Duffy said in an interview with California Watch and KQED. “I’m actually hearing radio and seeing TV advertising. It’s gone mainstream. Not only is it inappropriate – one has to wonder what kind of message we’re sending to our children – it’s against the law.”

So let me get this straight. The Obama administration is unwilling to prosecute financial industry players who participated in illegal acts which collapsed the global economy. But his U.S. attorneys are all amped up to protect “THE CHILDEN” from medical marijuana advertisements.

As everyone in the Southern California media world knows, medical marijuana ads are almost singlehandedly keeping the alternative press alive. And, increasingly, the mainstream press too. California Watch says the Sacramento Bee has a huge medical weed ad section these days.

Funny that the Obama administration’s crackdown comes as the Occupy Wall Street movement gains momentum with the press. Not only does going after medical marijuana gut the left-wing press, it will kill a politically active new industry with money to burn. Seems like a crazy thing for a struggling Democratic president to do in the lead up to an election. Unless said president is a cynical stooge, awash in Wall Street campaign contributions. But that couldn’t possibly be the case.
