Former LA Kings Winger Sean Avery Joins Gay Marriage Media Campaign

Here’s something you don’t see…well…pretty much ever. An active professional athlete coming out in full-fledged support of gay rights. Former LA Kings player Sean Avery, who still spends his offseason in LA after shipping out to the New York Rangers, has signed on to the marriage equality media campaign in New York.

Of all the professional sports you’d expect a player to get involved in the fight for gay marriage, hockey would seem to be near the bottom of the list. Avery spoke to the New York Times about his decision to get involved with the campaign: “The places I’ve played and lived the longest have been in West Hollywood, Calif., when I played for the LA Kings, and when I moved to New York, I lived in Chelsea for the first four years. I certainly have been surrounded by the gay community. And living in New York and when you live in LA, you certainly have a lot of gay friends.”
