Google’s Schmidt: Newspapers Need to Get Mobile, Personal

eric_schmidt04122010.jpgSpeaking at a Sunday meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that mobile devices and increased personalization in presenting the news were the way forward for media institutions. He also had a few comments on News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch‘s adversarial attitude toward Google and other search companies.

Schmidt said that although mobile devices like the iPad and the Kindle represent a new untapped revenue stream (with low distribution costs) for news organizations, no single device is the singular future of the media business.

On Murdoch, who has, ahem, questioned the ways Google and other Internet companies appropriate content for their own gain, Schmidt said, “It’s best to look at Rupert’s comments in context of a business negotiation.”

Although Schmidt said he wasn’t speaking to instruct newspapers in how to run their operations, we’re pretty sure those in attendance were listening carefully, given the volume of Web traffic his company controls.
