The Daily Questions Van Damme’s Return to Chechnya

Good item today on The Daily about two very different celebrity reactions to the public’s outrage over an October visit by Hollywood folk to Chechnya for “City Day” celebrations coinciding with the 35th birthday of the Russian republic’s brutal leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.

While Hilary Swank donated the fee she received to charity and fired her PR folks (in what some deemed an unfair scapegoat move), Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was also on the trip with her and Seal, has done no such thing. In fact, according to The Daily, he returned to Chechnya in November:

Flying in on a private jet, Van Damme was given a police escort to meet with Kadyrov, who treated him as the guest of honor at a performance of a Chechen folklore play called “Spiritual Values,” followed by a dinner of traditional Chechen delicacies, like mutton head and sheep-tail fat.

No comment so far from Van Damme or his still-employed reps. Under the headline “Action Zero,” The Daily also managed to dig up a recent Chechen state TV interview given by the Muscles from Brussels, during which the actor opined that “Mr. Kadyrov tries to go make this country peaceful.”
