Irish Journalism Grad Follows in Clark Kent’s Fictional Footsteps

We want to give newly installed Irish Central writer Sean Dunne a very hearty FishbowlNY winter’s welcome. And thank the makers of 1993-97 ABC-TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman for inspiring the 24-year-old Master’s journalism grad to make his way across the pond.

In a delightful weekend essay about his move over the holidays to NYC, Dunne makes joking reference to the Dean Cain-Teri Hatcher show and explains how he came to choose Irish Central out of a number of different, international opportunities. Beneath a headline and sub-headline that, rather refreshingly, refer to the author in the third person:

Most young media graduates are faced with the reality of working for free at present in Ireland, in what can only be described as the dreaded “I” – internships.

I was unsatisfied at this prospect and decided to take matters into my own hands. I decided I was going emigrate.

In fact, at Dunne’s NUI Galway graduation ceremony in November, one of the other 14 students said at one point: “This piece of paper will serve me well in the social security office next week.” But there would be none of that downcast attitude for Dunne, who instead evidently embraced the mantra ‘Faster than a speeding journalist.’

Dunne concludes his essay with the observation: “As I sit at my desk in Manhattan overlooking this amazing city, I know I made the right choice.” We agree. Read his full piece here.
