Perhaps it was all the pre-hype, but we watched Katie Couric‘s debut as anchor of the CBS Evening News this evening with a genuine sense of wonderment. Perhaps, too, it was the pre-hype that caused that wonderment to turn to criticism of what was otherwise a solid first outing:
Eye-liner: Too much. We had the fortune to watch the broadcast in HD, and, let’s just say, HD didn’t do Couric any favors on this particular evening.
CBSNews.com: Too many cross-promotions — we counted at least three — of “log-on to CBSNews.com for more.” Wouldn’t one at the beginning and/or end of the broadcast be enough?
No signature sign-off: Couric side-stepped the traditional sign-off, opening the floor to viewers to — what-else — log-on and offer their suggestions for hers. Just pick one.
Folksy overload: In introducing a segment on a global art project involving Nicaraguan orphans, Couric quoted from Peter Gabriel‘s “In Your Eyes.”
