KTTV Investigation Leads to Formation of LASD Cyber Squad

This is worth way more than a local journalism prize. Today on Fox 11, reporter Gina Silva gave viewers a first look at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s new “electronic communications unit.”

What makes today’s report so special is that this cyber squad was set up as a result of Silva’s earlier 2012 reports on the phenomenon of “Facebook parties,” illegal affairs where drugs and alcohol are sold to often underage patrons. LASD Captain Mike Parker at one point in the piece says: “The Fox series helped us to see that it was even bigger than we’d realized. So I’d like to thank Fox.”

As Silva also points out, LASD eComm Unit personnel are not using fancy surveillance gear to keep tabs on these Facebook party promoters. Just extra-large computer monitors and desktop applications that aggregate Facebook and Twitter feeds.
