‘LA’: Los Angeles Times Media Group Takes New Approach to Sunday Magazine Business

Annie Gilbar Named Editor-in-Chief

LOS ANGELES, July 28 — The Los Angeles Times Media Group announced today that it will begin publishing “LA” on September 7th, a monthly Sunday magazine, with Annie Gilbar named as editor-in-chief. Signaling a serious intent to competitively engage in the Southern California marketplace, “LA’s” look and attitude will celebrate the unique nuances of life in Los Angeles.

“Scratch the surface and Los Angeles is center stage; the city of surprise, diversity, culture and fashion,” says Annie Gilbar. “The world watches Southern California and “LA” is aimed at celebrating our town’s confidence, our success, our talent, our style and our possibilities. Our pages showcase great writers and photographers whose memorable stories and images will make you laugh and cry.”

Former editor-in-chief of LAStyle magazine, one of the founding editors of InStyle magazine and former editor-in-chief of Live! Magazine, Annie Gilbar has also co-authored 18 books. In addition, she served as executive vice-president and editor-in-chief of WeddingChannel.com and president of MyTime.com, as well as spent three years co-producing and co-starring in her own “Annie’s Eye” hit television series on Home Shopping Network.

Gilbar has assembled a stellar staff of award-winning magazine veterans including Creative Director Rip Georges, Deputy Editor Nancie Clare, Senior Editors Tessa Benson and Jod Kaftan, Editor-at-Large Robin Sayers, Design and Culture Editor Mayer Rus, Food and Wine Editor Lora Zarubin, Fashion Director Lori Goldstein, Managing Editor Helene Goldsen, and Director of Manufacturing and Production Marc Barrington. Contributing editors include Orlando Pita, Andrew Bridge, David Steinberg, Robyn Todd, Kathy Freston, Kelly Meyer, Gil Garcetti, Paul Fortune, Lori Marshall, Dr. Judith Reichman, Dr. Dale Atkins, Greg Turpan, Victoria Brynner, and more.

“LA” will debut with its fall fashion issue, which will showcase the new glossy stock with a gatefold cover and have 140-plus pages. The October 5th magazine will focus on design, home and entertaining and the November/December edition (out around Thanksgiving) will highlight the season with an indispensable guide to gifting and celebrating the holidays in style.

Valarie Anderson has been named publisher of “LA” and will also retain her position as director of fashion advertising, Los Angeles Times. Prior to joining The Times, Anderson was the U.S. associate publisher of the Sportswear International trade fashion magazine and served as west coast director of the W Magazine Group’s Women’s Wear Daily.

“We’re delighted to bring a new, exciting magazine to Southern California and to embark on a direction that allows immense opportunity for national and local advertisers to have an impact on millions of readers,” said Anderson. “Annie Gilbar’s exemplary talent promises to deliver a lively and smart publication that will be the talk of the town, and give both longtime and new advertisers a stylish arena for engaging our audience.”

“LA” will be distributed only within the Sunday Los Angeles Times and is a stand-alone editorial operation.
