LA Times Kicked Off Labor Day Weekend With Worker Layoffs

While we were busy planning our Labor Day barbeques on Friday, the Operations department of the LA Times was losing over 30 employees. We hear the layoffs include 16 workers from packaging and distribution, 10 from the pressroom, and five newsprint handlers.

Killing jobs is probably not the best way to celebrate a holiday that honors the labor movement and the American worker. But Tribune Co., parent company of the LA Times, isn’t exactly known for their good timing

Last week, Tribune Co. asked bankruptcy courts to approve a $42.5 million “incentive” plan for managers. That’s money to provide managers with incentive to cut costs, like laying off much-needed employees from an already understaffed newspaper.

Ed Padgett’s blog has details of the pressroom layoffs. We’ll let you know if we hear more.
